I just got a 30-30 for deer for next season, but what im wondering is, is the round good for any other game? Bigger stuff, if so what is the best grain round to use, is bigger better?

The standard is 170 grain, but I use both the 170's and 150's.

StiffDrink is what you're going to need if I think I know where this thread is going to go..........

Indeed, here let me help it along. The 30-30 is good for all North American game!

You can, and it's recommended. Federal Fusion 170g's. Keep your shots under 150y and have good placement. Nice handy round.

I hunted big game for many years with a Model 94 in .32 Win Spl. (ballistic equivalent to the thutty thutty) I can attest it will kill any deer you can see to hit within 100 yards.

i always used whatever was available 150/170 winchester both have been used for deer and black bear dad always used 170gr remingtons for moose we're talking stalking, bush style method within 75 yards or so.

If the .30/30 is all you have, then that's what you use. Shoot the 170 Silver tip Win, 170 Fed Fusion or Hornady LeverEvolution 160 FTX... Stay within 150 yards... Practice with your gun and load and place the bullet in the lungs.

:) Good choice and they work well. Another favorite of mine, and something that's no longer available, the old C.I.L. Pneumatic. They were a close second choice for me.

I was assuming that your .30/30 is a lever action, likely Win or Marlin... You can also shoot spire points with one in the chamber and ONLY ONE in the magazine... I shoot .30/30 in single shot rifles and mine love the Nosler 150 BT's over LVR powder...

I don't know why so many people place such a restricted distance on the killing power of the 30-30 class, or less, rifles.
Of the true stories that I know have really happened over the years, I will give two examples.
In Manitoba in homestead days a group of men were working with their teams of horses at a gravel pit in the winter. A moose appeared at a known distance of a quarter mile. One of the men was a Native Indian and he stated that if the moose showed up the next day, he would kill him. The others all laughed at him, telling him the distance was 440 yards. "I know," said the Native, "I'll shoot him."
The next morning the Indian brought his rifle with him, a Winchester 44-40!
As if on schedule, at noon the moose appeared, same place. The Native took a long, thought out aim, shot and killed the animal, with the one shot!
In homestead Saskatchewan was an exceptionally good hunter who used an 1894 Winchester, in 32 Special calibre. In the winter he took his team and sleigh to a field, where he had a stack of hay. He loaded the hay, then climbed up on the hayrack to go home. He looked and saw a moose beyond the end of the field. He knew his haystack was 300 yards from the end of the field and he said the moose was about thirty yards beyond the field.
He laid down on his load of hay, made a mental calculation of elevation needed, carefully squeezed off a shot and killed the moose.
Regardless what you may say about what I have written, I know the two events happened, exactly as I have written.

30-30 has piss poor trajectory. I'm sure they have enough oomph to kill anything, but for an ethical shot one needs to practice and know hold overs at known distances with the rounds they hunt with.

At sixteen years of age I was able to bring down a large British Columbia bull moose with one shot from a model 94 30-30 with a piece of leather in place of the rear sight elevator. Of course back then I didn't know that the 30-30 was no good for moose.
