Now dont get me wrong I love shooting the SKS but would you or do you hunt with this firearm/cartridge for deer or whatever? Im just curious how it went, or the horror stories.;) I have a friend who shoots 7.62 with his Norico "bush ranger " for wolves, just seeing what else people use it for. Great inexpensive cartridge.;)

I used mine for bear one spring.Shot one & it only went 10 yards.125gr HP. I remember it well because I was comeing out of my stand & the ladder broke.I layed on my back for 15 minutes before I got my wind back & senses. DAN

im going to this fall hopefully for deer. but only as a short range dogging gun. nuthin wrong with it, i seen in national geographic they had an article on russian bear hunting and thats what all the guides use. and most other people their don't shoot anything bigger then a 30-06

yea why not? for short ranges on whitetails - imho its a better bush gun cartridge than the .243 I also use for deer.

I've used that cartrige on a few deer and one moose. I shot all the deer on the front quarter broad side.... pass through and died within 40 yards of being shot . I shot the moose behind the right front quarter through both lungs and hit the top of the heart. The bullet went through the ribs and hit the left shoulder joint, nuckle.... the bullet went another 2 inches that moose ran 80 yards. (note the bullet didn't expand win. power point 123 gr. there was just a tear down the nose of the bullet) I shot the moose at 30 yds. The bullets i used on the deer were Federal 123 gr. P.S.P. all the kills that I made were within 75 yards.

I've taken 2 deer with 7.62x39, it seemed to do the job :D Both were under 100 yards. I plan on doing it again this year  So yes, you can hunt with it, IMHO it's just as good as 30-30, if not better!

A guy I hunt with uses his SKS all the time, a couple years back, he shot a monster buck about 50 yards away. the bullet made it to the heart and stopped. The deer is dead and the head is hanging on his wall but I wouldn't use it for big game even if you paid me. ie: there are MUCH better calibers out there.

as for placement/bullet/caliber, I believe there are calibers that "forgive" easier than others. I don't know about you guys but, when I use a bush gun, it means I'm not benching on a table to get the perfect shot. And to think about it, since when is a SKS accurate?

The SKS rifle may not be the best tool to deliver the bullet but in a good modern hunting rifle there is little wrong with that caliber!

I like it. We need to have this programmed so that you can fill in the blanks. For example:

- 30/06 vs. 308
- Best all-round cartridge for North America
- 22 CF for deer
- .......................

And
- 30-06 vs .270,
- Are Norincos any good

BTW, I took my SKS out this weekend chasing bear. Saw two but no meat.
