hunting with 7.62 x39?

Dudes, the answers are very simple:

308/30-06 - 308.
30-06/270 - 270
270/280 - 280
22cf on deer - only if you're a consistently amazing shot
Norinco OK? - Sometimes.

No, the big question is 'what's the ideal bear defense cartridge/calibre?'

;) ;)

Well I picked up the rifle, scope is on order, illuminated german reticle Leupold 1.5 to 4 x 20 ( or something like that!) A quick run out at the farm this week with some fmj prior to setting up the dies for loading and a quick stalking trip next wednesday evening. Busy few days eh?

I like it. We need to have this programmed so that you can fill in the blanks. For example:

- 30/06 vs. 308
- Best all-round cartridge for North America
- 22 CF for deer
- .......................

how about "What is the best slug for bear defense"

Here's my little lad aged 12 who's just learnt that even a tiny round like the 762 x 39 will kick in a featherweight carbine like the CZ 527. Still waiting on the scope then out for fun!

you know it has a lovely recoil pad but the blast from that short barrel has to be experienced!

the 7.62x39 launches a 125gr bullet ~2400 fps (from a 20" bbl). The 30-30 is specc'd to launch a 150gr bullet at 2400fps, but I only chrono 2100 out of my 18.5" 336. So they're effectively identical. But the 7.62x39 has the advantage of pointed spitzer bullets, so it's probably even got a slight edge @ 100.

A SKS 7.62x39 with the five round internal mag would be quitte the yotey gun.

My brother has one but has yet to shoot a coyote with it. Its mostly used for paper punching and the odd gopher or two. We will have to get it out for deer this fall.

awwww.................. holy 1800's batman! "one shot drop on the redman daddy!" (target in the back)

just joking, glad to see a kit out shooting

Very good caliber for Deer hunting at 100 -150 m range max. Got two with it. Not that accurate, but cheap and rock solid when carried by a SKS.

^300 Savage, or 303 savage? The 300 Savage is within spitting distance of the 308, and considerable more potent than the 7.62x39. The 303 Savage, OTOH is more akin to the 30-30

Ya I got that part when I saw the results of the 30-30 versus 762x39:D
But I tell you what, that 762 x 39 looks to be a hot little round for a young fella, or gal. Gotta keep that in mind when young Josey is ready for his first deer gun.
Oh whats the recoil like with the cz rifle in that caliber?

About what you'd expect. Similar to a marlin 336 30-30 carbine. A young-un should be able to tolerate it indefinitely, so it'd make a good practise/huntin caliber

I just agreed to purchase an SKS, was going to use it for deer... do you use FMJ military ammo or does anyone know where other (HP or softpoint) 7.62x39 is available?

Wanna know this before I sell my enfield to pay for the EVIL EVIL BAD SKS. :)

Don't use FMJ for hunting.. big no no.

I have a couple of boxes of Federal 125 Gr SP, they were not very expensive but I haven't seen any around in a year or so. They are available if you do a little searching.

I thought factory sks hunting rounds are as easy to get as any other.
