Hunting with 8mm mauser's....

An average Alberta whitetail. Shot was around 175 yds; 200gr Nosler Accubond. The buck dropped at the shot, got up took about 2 steps and was down for the count. Took him about 2/3s of the way up the left shoulder.

The rifle is a Remington M-700 'Classic' in 8mm Mauser. The scope is a Leupold Vari-X III 2-8X.
 
With my 8MM Mauser German sporter, with william apature peep sights i have tooken 4 deer,1bear and 1 moose.

ammo was 170 gr reloads with 50gr of imr 4350 @2450fts

will put some pics up as soon as my scanner is up and working.

With my trusty husky 8x57 loaded with 250 gr woodleigh. He went about 10 yards. I didn't weigh him but I think he's 250+.

I love the 8x57 - great mix of bullets from 160 to 250 gr.

Funny you should ask about 8mm I am working out of LaRonge for the summer and space was limited for summer guns opted on my M48 Sniper and a Mauser hunting rifle I have both as the hunting rifle is somthing I have to regulate my loads to its on a mauser claw,, none the less the sporter is for a trip to Africa in 2014 if I can get it to work really want to use 200 grain and or 215

Some more details: It was a double lung shot, hit a rib on the close side but still exited no problem. He jumped and ran about 20 feet. I was impressed, with the heavy slow bullet it kicks much less than my 30-06 with comparible performance.

What velocity to you get with those heavy bullets? With the 220Gr i was getting 2300fts? Im guessing your getting 2000-2100fts?

I don't have a chronograph - I used the woodleigh website: http://www.woodleighbullets.com.au/info-a-reference/loading-tips
it's about halfway down.

It says about 2200 fps. I'm definately under this - I figured about 2100 fps. Looking at the bruising in the meat and the exit wound it appears to have expanded. There is a paper online looking at 9.3x62 rounds fired into elephant - I believe some of the heavier bullets still expanded very well at lower velocities. I'll try to find a link.

You need a chronograph. Until you get one, you never know what velocity your loads are producing, no matter what you might think.

I began reloading without one, and man was I surprised when I bought my Chrony and started using it!

In terms of reloading equipment, they are the best use of $120 I can think of.
 
I forgot to mention I have also shot a coyote with one. Used 195 gr hornady SP IL. The range was a little over 100 yards. It made a mess but at least the coyote dropped on the spot.
