I keep reading that "everybody has to have a 22!" Most people seem to use them for plinking. Does anybody here use them for actual hunting (besides hunting pests and paper)?

The 25 round magazines really help with the wing shooting. I clipped a grouse in the neck and downed it while it was taking off this year. To it's credit, it was on about the 8th shot and just after I tried about 8 shots at another one and missed.

I bought it for grouse, but I found myself going back to my shotgun once in a while.

Please don't tell me you wing shoot grouse with a .22?

are you sure that this is safe? You must be in the middle of no-where but even then.

I've got a 9 power scope on my all weather 10/22 and it's absolutely the best rabbit gun in the world! Kick a pile of brush, let a bunny run, then stalk it through the snow till you can squeeze off a head shot. Lot's of fun!

219... If you read carefully the same post you quotes, you may notice "as it was taking off" implying the bird was not flying when he shot it....

unstable ryan.... when you refer to a "wing shot" its a practise hunters use hunting upland game birds in flight..... intentionally shoot high on the bird ( to hit the wings) and thus not damnage any meat.

and many people shoot thewir first game with a .22

My first ever hunt was with a 20ga shot gun.... but early into hunting I shot MANY grouse with bolt action .22

Wingshooting is merely shooting at a bird in flight or at a flying target.

That would be quite a trick to pick where you're going to hit a bird using a shotgun.

My 10/22 is mostly a plinker, as I prefer my shortened shotgun for grouse. (18.5" barrel).
But now that I live near prairie dogs I'm sure I'll use it for them.
