Hunting with a 10/22

Wingshooting is merely shooting at a bird in flight or at a flying target.

That would be quite a trick to pick where you're going to hit a bird using a shotgun.

Not out here it isn't. it's taking the birds in the wing, especially those that have set their wings to land in your decoys. :D

Lots of game shot with a 22.

My 10/22 was my first rifle. It's over 20 years old now. I'd never sell it.

I shudder to think of how many rounds has been through her and she is still ticking.

Many gopher have fallen to her.

Reasonable question, but it's a sad state of affairs when someone has to ask if a .22 is a legitimate hunting rifle! It used to be the rifle that everyone learned to hunt with. I must be approaching Fudddom! I have taught a lot of new hunters and mentored a couple each of the last several years, and I refuse to take new hunters big game hunting until they have a reasonable amount of experience on small game with a .22. It is far less than ideal for beginners to grab a centerfire rifle and start hunting big game with it with no other experience, and small game hunting with a .22 is a worthwhile, lifelong pursuit in it's own right. I suppose as society becomes more and more urbanized the few days big game hunting is all many people get... but most rural people still know that a .22 is a vital part of a hunters essential equipment, and they use them a lot!

grouse, rabbits, paper, cans , clay pigeons, plastic bottles, and thousands of gophers.
( clay pigeons on the ground!!!!!)

Wing shooting......

To shoot on the wing - bird in flight.

The practise of a wing shot - shooting for the birds wings.

maybe this is worth of a pole? I know that the Brits refer to "the practise of a wing shot"

I never hear of such a thing... mind you I have shot many birds in the wing, but never intentionally. I always go for a head shot on flying birds. Surprisingly few have been "shot up" with the shotgun.

Hunting with a .22 is limited on PEI as you can rarely find a mile of land without a human on it. We are limited by law to bunnies and vermin. I have hunted a bit with the .22 but really makes sense to hunt with a shotgun here as I hate letting a grouse walk away.

I know the definition, and I am not disputing it.

But in hunting Canada geese, it's what we try and do. I would assume lots of guys try and do it. Much harder to accomplish on teal that are moving very fast.

are you sure that this is safe? You must be in the middle of no-where but even then.

Yes... really out in the middle of nowhere. I live in BC. the middle of nowhere takes 10 minutes from here and I was farther than that.

Yes I shot it flying, the bullets went into the bank and thick jackpine trees, I wasn't shooting straight up or out into a valley or anything. It was maybe 8 feet off the ground flying right to left, gaining altitude to get the hell out of there.

I have had the gun a year and a half and I've put about 4-5000 through it. It points nice, shoots nice.. it's light and quick and I really like it. Damn, I might go out today and shoot it. I've been playing center fire a lot lately...
