Anyone hunted waterfowl or deer with a 14 inch shotgun? Is accuracy any better or worse than it is with a longer barrel?

Unless the deer/birds are in a house you are storming I'm not sure that a 14" is a good hunting barrel. I'd say 20" min for hunting but that's just my thought on it, others may differ.

I gotta 20" for my 870.

I don't think I'd want it shorter unless I was taking down a crack house in my full route mall ninja outfit

Hehehe! Thankfully my mom (who lives in Pointe-du-Chene) knits me 2 pairs of slippers every year and sends them to me at Christmas. I'm 41 years old! God bless her!

Bob, shorter bbl = less accurate. 14" = close range only. Not something you'd take duck hunting! Do deer typically wander through your living room? :D

As long as the powder fully burns why not use a short barrel. The only difference is the sighting plane, you are more accurate with the longer sighting plane but there is no difference in pattern at a given range based on barrel length, as long as the choke is the same. I love short barrels for upland that is why I got the turkey version of the 870 with 23" barrel. The ducks and geese don't know the difference either. The only thing I would wonder is how long of a barrel you would need with shotgun powder to fully burn the powder and maximize velocity, I have heard 18" but I am not sure on that one.

Well even at 18 inches you will give up some velocity with most loads in 12 gauge guns... and the barrel length will effect shot string too.

Hunting with a 14 inch shotgun for anything but birds at very close range is dumb.
Slugs will not perform adequately from barrels this short for big game... 24 inches is optimum for smoothbore slugs... and 26 inches is optimum for a 1:28 twist rifled barrel and sabots.
Buckshot is for Varmints only!

Thanks for the feedback guys (love the slippers) Seems the general consensus is that I should really use a longer barrel as the geese aren't flying around in my living room. I was in al simmons the other day and picked up a 14 inch norinco 870 clone and I have to admit it was one of the sweetest guns I ever handled, walking through the heavy bush with it would be like hunting with a handgun and the zombies I frequently encounter wouldnt stand a chance with it :p

However I am a hunter (mostly bow and my friends borrowed side by side 12 guage) so I think Ill probably get the 28 incher and possibly the 14 incher for some fun at the range.

ahh another option I wasn't aware of, thanks for the info, Ill have to talk to the folks at the gun shop and see what they can find :)
