Hunting with a .250-3000?

I used to hunt deer with a .250 -3000 (a Ruger M-77 International) occasionally and never had any complaints. A 100 grain Nosler Partition worked just fine on whitetail deer.

Strangely enough, the .260 Rem with 129's feels very similar to my old .250-3000. My guess is that the .260 would be a pretty close equivalent (and probably a bit more versatile, given the ability to use heavier bullets).

If you already have one, there aren't a lot of down-sides to the .250 Savage (except hard-to-find brass, maybe). It's light, pleasant to shoot and kills deer effectively.

If you're going to run into bigger game, though, I'd suggest something a little bigger, like the 7x57/7mm-08, .270 or 6.5x55/.260. They're all still easy to shoot well and allow for heavier bullets to be used.
