Hunting with a Mauser

I hunt with a 7x57 model 1908. I use it for bear, moose, and deer.
I find that pretty much with any mauser in good shape, you can't go wrong - they're incredibly accurate. (Perhaps something to do with the 14 foot barrel). 7x57 is plenty big enough for moose - assuming you can hit the vitals (and you shouldn't be shooting if you can't).

It's a little heavy to be slogging through swamps though.

Just watch out for the price of the ammo.. best I can find is $25 for a box of Core Lokt.

I'd go for the 8mm all day long. A greater cross sectional area for greater impact and faster put downs. The 8mm has about a 50% greater impact area.

Also, the potential of heavier bullets also makes large and/or dangerous game hunting a surer proposition.

6.5X55 for me. Great caliber. I plan on using mine for spring black bear this year and my daughter will use it for moose this fall. I use Barnes 140 gr TSX's in it, very accurate and quite devastating on game.
