Hunting with a muzzle loading shotgun

I won a auction last night on a muzzle loading shotgun and hope to be able to take a few grouse with it this fall. I have no experience with muzzle loaders or black power for that matter. Are there any books or websites that I can use to get my feet wet?

Hunting with a muzzleloading shotgun is a lot of fun.Get yourself a copy of Sam Faladas Black powder loading manual cover all BP guns from rifles, shotguns and BP cartridges. Here s a pic of mine a Pedersoli Baker percussion 12ga with a single non selective trigger.I also have a Pedersoli Mortimer 12ga flintlock

Now that you have it, start collecting bee / wasp nests to use for wads.
They are free, and always fit in the bore. Just crumble up a wad of nest over the powder and a wad of nest over the shot. Works great for me with birdshot and a roundball.

I have hunted with muzzle loading shotguns since 1980, love 'em!
Lyman has a good book , and there are several others as well.
Hit the Rendezvous and the fellas there will be more than happy to help you out.
You may live near a club as well.
Many shooters i know do not use cushion wads on their muzzle loaders , just one nitro wad in beteen the shot and powder , or wasp nest.

I use a fibre cushion wad only when the chamber of an original gun is a bit rough , to help get the wad column up into the barrel a bit more.
In a gun with a good barrel I have never known a difference, and some shooters have actually found their guns pattern better because the wad don't disrupt the shot pattern.

Thanks for the replies, Ill check out those books and see if there's any clubs near by. I finally received the tracking number tonight, so should have it by next wednesday.

Catnthehat, your pictures from other threads are what got me to wanting one of these...

Couple general rules of thumb. Use the same volume of powder and shot as a start, more powder will open your pattern, less will close it.

Bonus points if you practice up with round ball and ethically take a big game animal with it!

One thing to check is the bore sizes. Some ML's are not quite the ga that they are marked. I have a Pedersoli that all hell won't get a 12 ga wad in the barrels, and a friend has a matching one that is the same . 13 ga wads fit perfect in these guns and are readily available if needed.

Exsctly!I came to the conclusion a long time ago that muzzle loading bores are much like cartridge OAL - just because a particular cartridge or gauge is supposed to be such and such does not mean the rifle works best at that OAL / or the shotgun work with a particular size of wad for a particular gauge!
