Anyone know if it's possible to hunt deer with a Norinco HP-9 with the 14" barrel, using 3" magnum slugs (I was thinking using it with a red dot when we're bushwhacking - incase something pops up sub 50m).

I've never hunted before and I'm planning to use my Norinco M305 as a primary, but seeing as I'm going with a friend out of province, I wouldn't mind having a secondary and the HP-9 is my only other non-restricted (besides a 10/22 and a DA Backpacker).

Thoughts?

My only concern would be what sort of velocity you're getting out of that very short barrel. Most slug guns are about 20-24" aren't they?

I have an HP9-1. It's not really designed for hunting, to be honest. Would I use it to hunt if I was in a survival situation, of course, but otherwise no.

Seeing as you don't have any firearms that are good for hunting, why not invest in one? You'll have it the rest of your life and can use it for more than just hunting too. Maybe something in 30-06 or similar?

you could get a mauser in 8mm, 30-06, 6,5 mm all for around 250$ from trade ex that would work as a better back up heck or do what i did get some work done to them and have one hell or a hunting rifle.
Mine is third from the bottom, re-blued, new walnut stock fitted form me with oil finish, bolt polished, new timney trigger 3.5 lb pull, and a Burris FFL 2 2-7x. 30-06

It will be fine.

You will find that, on deer within 50m, with quality rifled slugs, your HP9-1 will be both accurate and deadly.
