Hunting with a short 20g

Thank you very much for that. It looks as though the Maverick lines up with the Bantam. I think at the price I just found the Maverick, I suspect that's what we'll be buying. Now to convince my wife to let me sign up for her hunters apprenticeship course and I'll be all set.

The safety on the Maverick is a lot less intuitive and a lot more difficult to use than the one on the 500/505/510 models.

North Pro has the 505 Youth @$469. :http://northprosports.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=28_169_456&product_id=8532

My truck gun is single shot 20ga Win mod 37 with 18.5" long barrel.
Nobody but nobody is employing thicker barrel than this model so recoil with 3" magnums is no problem but
I wish that barrel to be at least 20" b/c that 1.5" would make big difference in noise department I think.
GR8 2c worth....

I bought the Maverick 88 youth last year for my boy.
Fun little gun, and despite everyone's hate on the safety, he's never had a problem.
Slugs kick as expected but he can easily hit a clay on a fence post at 40 yards offhand with the challengers.
I find I punch myself in the nose with my thumb as the lop is really short. He really likes it though!

Any chance you could measure the lop for me? I'm finding some conflicting information online.

I use a Ricol O/U 20g with 14" barrels as my grouse gun. My hunting buddies liked it so much, they all have them over the years. Weight is there, it has different chokes (though I use full and mod for grouse), but it is loud without ear protection. Even shot a few rounds of trap with it - shot a 20 and 21. My sons have a single shot .410 and they like it, but they find it has a bit of a kick (they are only 8 and 7).

Just a correction, the 20 gauge, over/under Ricol has a 16 inch barrel, decent fibre optic sights for shooting slugs and screw in chokes. It is a fantastic choice for the op: if he can find one and doesn't mind cutting the stock and adding a recoil pad. The single select trigger is awesome. I would pick it over a pump personally.

As predicted, I ordered the Maverick. If it ends up a bit too long, well I'll fix that.

Larry, I appreciate the pics of your Ricol's. I'll be keeping that on my radar. Looks like a damn fun gun to play with.

I don’t know if you’d notice too much difference in noise between 18.5” and 20” barrels, I have a 14” & 20” barreled 870 and they are about the same. I wear electronic ear pro when shooting and hunting though, but both are plenty loud.

My quad/thick brush is a 20ga Weatherby PA-08 Threat Response pump. It has an 18.5" cylinder barrel which I find very effective for 25-30yds. Dante have them listed this year at $227-heckuva deal.
It would be very easy to have it fitted to your daughters frame. I nipped 3/4" off the stock and reground the pad in less than an hour and it still looks factory.

I’ve been wanting to get the lowdown on that model, so you’re happy with it overall?

It looks like Weatherby discontinued the PA-08 line.
.

No issues with mine and am happy with it for its intended use. I was surprised at the quality for the price. I would have a hard time buying an 870 express compact at their price point compared to the PA. However there are no aftermarket goodies for the PA if that is important to the buyer. It is a bargain at $227 imho.
