I was looking at getting a new Hunting Rifle (30-06) and probably a Tikka T3 or the new browning X-bolt,

can you Hunt effeciently with a Stainless Barrel? is it too much glare? is the stainless Barrell better than the blued?(or just preference)

Thanks

I prefer Blued, my hunting partner prefers stainless and to be honest, the deer don't care for either of them!:D

Honestly, I probably spook more deer than he does, the barrels make no difference.

Caliber for North America? Well, consider the biggest animal you are going to hunt, then consider the smallest, and finally (most importantly) what caliber are you the most comfortable with? Shot placement (a rifle in a caliber you are good with) is crucial.

I guess a guy would also want to take into consideration how far he is willing to shoot at animals. If your daring enough to take longer shots you may prefer a flatter shooting rifle, if you hunt in wooded areas where your shots are always under 150 yards then you have many more good options.

would probably stay within 150 yards, a cal for everything from deer to moose elk bear and if im lucky ive always wanted bison!

cost and recoil isnt a problem,
I just dont want to buy a cal that is too big for an average size deer.

i got a .340 wby mag i'll sell ya! 300 win mag seems to be the choice for a lot of guys, shells can be found anywhere, plenty of take down power, same diameter as a 30 06, and i'd like to think its fairly flat. by no means expensive either, lil hard on the shoulder compared to some tho

I love my .375 H+H, and yes, it seems a bit much for deer but lots of the research I did before I bought it suggests that there will be less meat damaged from the .375's larger slower bullet than there will be from a faster shooting caliber.

Many folks out there like the .300wm or .300wsm. Purists however, will tell you you don't need a magnum, and a good old .30-06 will do it all. Others like the .338 (you did mention Moose, bear and Bison), with a heavier selection of bullets. 7mm mag's are a bit small for my tastes, but I know people who get it all done with this caliber too!

I'm sure I skipped over a few, which guys will be chiming in with here sooner or later!

bmwhockey,

30-06 is a fine cartridge and it will take down anything in Canada, plus it is a fairly flat shooting round. Good choice for a hunting round, hell.. next to the 303 it is probably the most used round in the hunting world.

Stainless is sweet, and you wont have to worry about the barrel rusting, or the blue wearing off. No it wont make a bit of difference in the woods. And if your that concerned about glare, get some camo cloth to wrap around the barrel.

Tikka T3's are also a fine and well made rifle.
Good luck in your purchase.

PS
If your a noob to guns, don't go real big until you have had a chance to try that .cal
A 300wsm can ruin a new shooter who hasnt shot anything with decent recoil. What I mean by that is you will develop a flinch and it could be very hard to correct, if at all!

I'm slowly switching all my rifles to stainless. Unless it's polished (like the pre-Hawkeye Rugers) stainless is not that reflective. Most of them have a satin or beadblasted finish that looks like a grey stick, there's lots of grey sticks in the bush.

That is pretty good advice.

I now have almost all of my hunting rifles in stainless. One is the new 'matte' finish and the others are shiny finish. The deer don't seem to care for either finish much.;)

What is nice, is when my brother-in-law and I got caught in a rainstorm this season, he had to clean and dry his rifle when we got back to camp. Mine didn't look any different the next day. Keep in mind, I always clean my rifles well once the hunt is over and I am back home.

Good luck and good hunting!

James

Like a few guys have already mentioned, the finish on a T-3 stainless barrel is a matte/ satin finish, and doesn't really reflect light all that well. It's not like it's polished chrome or anything.
