Sitting on a deer stand this week got me to thinking of the guns i use for hunting. I live i a area were white tail deer is our only big game and we can use either shotgun or muzzle loader
This year i had a gun without external hammers which is uncommon for me, i was using a 1901 Holland & Holland Paradox
I have used modern muzzle loading guns but mostly antiques is what i have used for deer hunting

1839 Joseph Egg & sons 12 bore ball gun
1849 Westley Richard 12 bore rifle
1851 Westley Richard 12 bore double rifle
1863 Powell 16 bore pinfire rifle
JSF Bortha 8 bore rifle
8 bore double rifle using a 3 1/2 inch shell these last two are a little heavy for deer
Even my first new T/C Hawken is 45 years old

Anybody else using there antiques for hunting

Never hunted big game with an antique, but have taken everything from geese to hares, rabbits, grouse and ptarmigan with a fine 14ga Birmingham made percussion double.

I m currently hunting deer with my BSA Lee Speed

Both for grouse, a 16-bore single-barrel hammer gun, Thomas Seymour of London (1841-1844), converted from percussion to centre-fire; and an early centrefire 12-bore hammer gun, Charles William Lancaster of London, 1864.

I generally make any rifle that spends a night or more in my place earn it's keep by putting some venison in the smoker...doesn't mater if it is a bonafide antique or replica of one ( the exception being some toggle actions that I wouldn't shoot anything more than plinking ammo through).

some of my 1800's rifles have killed more than one deer each but I have an 1886 45-70, a Marlin 38-40 and a couple 45-90's yet to "make them pay their way", this year the 86 will probably get the nod.
