Hunting with buckshot

Legal in AB... but I bet you knew that.

And now this becomes a pissing contest about hunting with buckshot in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...

From personal experiences with buckshot I would rather use a high power rifle any day. Buckshot is good for a couple of things. Impressing your friends and bear "defence". And for the bear defence I'm not even sure if I would trust it for more than a "get away from me" shot. Buckshot is vastly overrated.

And no it's not allowed for hunting big game in Manitoba.

Like has been said...it's legal in Ont for big game.
Is it a wise choice...IMHO no. Very limited circumstances, shots < 30 yards.
The local bush pushers, think that it is effective at 80-100 yards.
They are hoping just to slow that animal down. I've heard volley's of gunfire during deer season...stopped counting at 80 shots!!!

I know guys that hunt like this, honestly, one deer they got was shot more than 6 times. :puke:

I use it in very limited circumstances. When im pushing, its the first shell in the gun. The second and third shells are slugs. I use a 20 inch rifle sighted smooth bore barrel with I/C choke on my 870. It will pattern very effectively out to the 30 yards. I wont shoot further then that with buckshot. Really, its only for the situations where I kick a deer up at really close range and need a very fast shot.

The only time I've ever seen it used on a deer was at 20 yards. No blood, limited hair, but the shooter said the deer kicked and jumped. Never did find that deer. At that range, he must have hit it, but the complete lack of a blood trail convinced me that it is probably not the best tool for the job.

I used 000 2 3/4" ONCE on deer. At about 10 yards broadside from a tree stand, all 9 rounds hit the deer, barely. I was probably using too much choke. Not one of the rounds exited. They were resting under the hide on the far side. The buck ran about 100ft and dropped. Pretty much every vital organ was hit. I don't think I'd wan't to use it past 25 yards, and slugs are WAY better.

Illegal for big game in AB.........I shot 3 deer with SSG when i lived in Ont. [all on the full run one at 60 yards]and they were dead before hitting the ground. One round each.Out of a full choke Win 1200 Threw great patterns but like almost all 1200's jammed when loaded with more than two shells......................Harold **So I only ever put one in the barrel and one in the mag

shot a deer with 00, range 12-15 yards, he fell right over. 2 of the pellets went out the other side, the rest stayed in, one went right through the shoulder blade.

Illegal for big game in AB.........

No, it's not.

Thanks for the help guys. I am just looking for some info to build a case for the Swiss authorities. Currently they will not release their stock of 00 Buck because they consider it a military munition with no sporting purpose. For some reason they consider the No 2 shot we got to be an ideal deer round (roe deer), but 00 buck is not used at all there.
