Any of you guys hunt with cast bullets?
For about ten years or so I hunted moose with my ruger #1 45-70 loaded with cast bullets. My bullets of choice for the ruger are Lyman 457406 gas checked wt. 475 grain the alloy is Lyman #2
I absolutely love this combination I've done things with this load that would make most of the young guys say bull#### your full it.

535 grains out out of a number 3 that could get a little wild especially with that little crescent shaped carbine butt :)

I thought my old 457406 was the only one around, you are the first person to mention it.
I use that bullet in both my 45-70s, the 450 / 348 AI, my 45-120, and even tried it in my 458..

I used them in a 458 as well. I used to have a interarms mark x mauser in the 458. I shot a beaver with it one time out at my trap line, It was pretty impressive to say the least. I've been a fan of the 45 ever since.
That bullet in your 45-120 must be a real power house! Ive flirted with the idea of a 45-120 many times over the years.

Over the years I have hunted and harvested deer, elk, moose, bear and bison with Lyman 405gr 457193 cast bullets in 45-70 and 45-90 with black powder. No gas check but with a wad over the powder.

I have not tried the Lyman 457132 535gr Postells for hunting yet but I have given it lots of thought. I find that the 405s are more than adequate for hunting.

I use the 457193 in my 1885. I'm not sure that I would want or need a heavier bullet for most hunting. I do use the 457125 for BPCR in my Rolling Block and if the opportunity presented itself to shoot another Bison I would probably choose that bullet but cast it out of a harder alloy. 30:1 might be a hair soft for hunting but the Roller loves to knock over rams with that bullet. Now if I could only find a bullet it liked to knock over chickens with...

I have hunted for years with cast as well.
.308, .358, .429, .458, and .50 cals.

All of them killed effectively. Home Cast bullets add another dimension into the personal involvement of the outcome. Its very satisfying!

Anyone can "Purchase" a mass produced bullet, but it takes some skills to produce/cast bullets that are consistant enough to hunt with.

Fun stuff!

Been shooting and hunting with cast since I was a teen. I currently use cast in calibers from .30 to .73, though I've also used cast boolits in .22, 6mm & 6.5mm. Lead has never let me down on game at the ranges I take 'em at.:)

It's encouraging that there's a few guys out there that hunt and shoot cast bullets.
I'm going to fire up my pot sometime this week and cast a pound or two. Get back to my roots in this shootin business.
While I'm at it I'll do up some round ball for shooting grouse. I used to shoot a light load of 7625 with a round ball those were always good fun. If I don't have any pistol powder left Im gonna buy a can of the trail boss.
I've just realized It's been five years since I've taken a 45 out. That's crazy how time slips away.

I am using Lyman's 375499 in my 38-55 with excellent results.

It casts at 285 grains with GC installed.

I pounded a Muley buck at 85 yards with that bullet, started at 1650 fps with N200 powder. It absolutely flattened him.

Penetration was complete, slightly angled through his lungs. Not a bad combination at all.

Regards, Dave.

My 1st centre fire rifle was a Stevens single shot .38-55. It came with an old Winchester mould and hand tool and a pound of black powder. I shot a lot of "varmints" with that rifle and a cast 250 gr lead bullet.

I shot a nice doe with that same bullet out of my SxS .38-55/12 ga "buchsflinte".

Several deer with 250gr LBT (Lead Bullet Technology) flat noses from a 35 Whelen. The last few years I've used both RCBS 300FN and 400FN slugs out of a 450 Marlin. Performance is excellent, none required more than 1 shot. I think its true, when you roll your own it adds to the hunt. Several million Buffalo have shown cast works very well.
