Hunting with dogs. What are your thoughts.

I don't find a huge need for hunting.. enough people killing animals already with taking away habitats ect. Don't call me a hippy. I just don't find the need...

As for hunting with dogs, I see no problem in this video. Be aware the dogs could get hurt. This is definitely a lot easier of a way of hunting... I could see hunting with dogs if you NEED to hunt for food. As for sport it would seem to me to take the sport out of it.

Again, id rather see the bobcat get away... gorgeous creature. Go blast ground hogs or tree rats something there is an abundance of lol. (Flame suit on for not being a hunter but liking guns)

You're going to get flamed for being ignorant, not for not being a hunter.

I have a really sore spot on the type of hunting where a pack of dogs trees the prey and the hunter just comes along and shoots it out of the tree. Personally I don't see that very sporting in my eyes.

drache, I don't mind you having a sore spot at all and I will gladly tell the next cat I get to hunt with dogs how you feel. When would you prefer I tell him? Before or after it's down?? I'm sure it will appreciate the sentiment.

Have you ever tried to chase down a cat, without dogs??? Have you been successful??

You don't need a pack to hunt cougars, even one well trained hound will do. A couple is even better. Many guys with hounds, have to many on the chase and because of that, the chase goes on a lot longer than it needs to.

the way I see it dogs are good for birds and that's about it I don't like to put my family members at risk. if you need to tree a big cat I don't the point im not going to say It should not be a option because that's someone else's choice to do it or not but id like my target to have a fare chance

I am personally not a fan of using dogs for anything besides birds. To me treeing a cat or running deer with a dog is not very "sporting."
Again this is my opinion, I would like to think most are about "ethical" hunting. While sure the animal might end up dead, right quick once the hunter shows up. I somehow doubt running for your life from a bunch of dogs would seem very fun or fair if the dogs were chasing you.
However if there is a legit need for predator or pest control to keep people and livestock safe.... well let er rip. (Sorry I don't consider your pet cat or dog in that list, and yes I have/ had both)
Once again JMO

I believe the video raises questions regarding what we should be hunting not on how we hunt. I have hunted birds with dogs for years and some of my best memories are being in the field with a good dog. However, I am unsure on why we hunt critters like Bobcats, or any wild cat, for that matter. I know i will get flamed for saying this, but just because we can does not mean we should.

We do our causes no favours when antis watch these type of videos. Tree a cat with dogs, shoot it out of the tree, and take picture of dead cat with a big smile, seems like a recipe for a losing argument. Perception is reality.

Totally agree with above statement. Hunting and tracking as skill set, respectful of nature I have no issue with. Chasing any animal with dogs that either tree it or tear it apart is f en cruelty. I especially find the hero's that allow their dogs to chase deer on the river ice repulsive and represent the sport of hunting at its worst.

Have any of you who think it's unsporting to run dogs, ever chased a pack? It's not easy catching up to dogs in rough country. But a hound baying is an electrifying sound, it'll keep you moving. It's a hard way to hunt. Also, not every cat that gets treed gets shot.
The dogs they use are born to it too. A friend of mine had a game bred hound as a foster dog. That dog could spend 4 hours a day on a treadmill, plus a run with my friend on his bike, and be 100% ready to go. They need to run and hunt, and get excited at the prospect of a hunt, just like a bird dog does when it see's the gun cases.

Feel how you will, I still don't believe it's fair hunting. No different than chasing an animal down on a quad until it's too tired and then shooting it in my books.

As for hunting without dogs, my great grandfather did it, a lot. Was rarely skunked. There are many places where hunting cougar with dogs is illegal and yet people still get their cats by calling them in.

On another forum I'm a member of, people have called cougars within easy bow shot distance.

In fact here's one of the member's website who is an avid cougar hunter, makes cougar calls, and is really good at getting his limit every year:

I take it you've never hunted with dogs? I have my doubts you could... Not very sporting indeed.lol

Yes I was on a hunt with a dog. The dog treed the bear and my friend shot it. Never hunted like that again and never hunted with that friend again. I don't find chasing a terrified animal through the brush until it's so tired it climbs a tree sporting at all. No different than chasing an animal while on a quad until it's so tired that it lays down waiting for you to kill it.

Our family have always used hounds for hunting, rabbit, fox, deer, racoon and coyotes. There are lots of dogs but not many real good ones, it takes a lot of time and work to get a dog trained to do what you want him to. A good dog is the best hunting partner you will ever have and I look back fondly on the memories of 50 years of dog ownership. Anybody that has followed hounds knows it more than just a matter of opening the tailgate of the truck and shooting your game 5 minutes later. In all my years of hunting i have never seen an unwounded animal be it racoon, fox, rabbit, coyote or deer run down by our dogs. It takes knowledge of your area, your games habits, some legwork and a bit of luck to be in the right place at the right time to get some shooting. There are some areas of hunting and shooting that I myself don't care for but I would never presume to critisize anyone elses perferences of legal hunting or shooting practices.

I've never hunted bear with dogs. I don't think I would but I'm not a bear hunter. I've never liked killing a bear.
Cats or pigs.. Yes. Birds, yes.

Jeese, when I hear hunting and dogs, I think feathers.
Kitty's that need to be put down, then send in the hounds.
Just my take on the feather/fur/hound/dog thing.

In Alberta, I think I remember something in the regulations about no dogs allowed when hunting deer, moose, elk or the like. Don't know about bears though. I'd be afraid of some idiot shooting my hounds by mistake anyway.

Myself, I refuse to impose my version of "ethical opinion" on other hunters using whatever legal means to take game in thier jurisdiction. Every province and territory has it's own idiosyncracies born out of unique local needs and traditional practices.
Thank-you for this voice of reason. Too bad more didn't feel the same way as you.

I'm trying to think of a reason NOT to hunt the cats? If there is a sustainable population, then hunting should be allowed. I suppose the people questioning the why's of this simply don't have a good understanding of the subject.

It seems that nowadays I will ONLY hunt WITH dogs. I enjoy all types of hunting but I have come to realize that I find the most enjoyment in hunting with hounds. All I need is a good beagle and a shotgun.
