Hunting with fixed power scopes -- Opinions please!

I hunt with variables, almost all Leupolds, but to be honest, 95% of the time I set them at 4X and leave them there for Moose and Caribou hunting. Especially if hunting in close cover, anything above that magnification and its almost impossible to find the animal in the scope, even with both eyes open, in time for a quick shot. For a light-weight hunting package, my favorite scope is the 2.5-8X36mm Leupold VX-III. From 5-500 yards, this scope will do it all in a nice, trim package.

There is nothing wrong with a fixed power scope, Most variables get set on 4x and left there for most (if not all) of hunting season . I wouldn't feel at a disadvantage using a fixed 4x on a 270.

I keep both eyes open because I see more clearly through the scope that way. Not sure why, but its more natural and relaxed to keep both eyes open.

Were you aware, peg, that letting the light in both eyes improves visual acuity somewhat, so that is probably what you are describing. I also shoot with both eyes open, and that is easier at lower powers. Eagleye.

How many variables do you suppose stay set on 4x-6x ? 4x or 6x are more than adequate for hunting. If I need more power to see what I am shooting at, then I shouldn't be shooting at it. Other pluses; lighter, less to go wrong, and cheaper to boot.
