Hunting with Hornady ELD X

Last weekend i was out with a friend of mine. He shot a bull moose with Hornady ELD-x 220gr out of a 300 win mag (2800 fps) and recovered the bullet. Shot was 200 yards away, double shoulder and bullet found on the far side hide. Nice mushroom, 120gr retained.

Wife and I just back from moose hunting, we each killed a bull using ELD-X bullets.

Both one shot kills, the one that surprised me was a frontal shot at 80 yards, broke two ribs on the way in and exited at the front of the rear quarter.

both bullets were pass throughs :)

I like the eldx in 7mm 162gr. Shot two bears one at 389 and one at 20 yards. Same terminal performance. Bullet hole in and a 2” exit. Instant death for both
Shot a big bc/Yukon moose this year at 515yards with the 212gr from my 300prc and it was a instant kill. Found the bullet under the hide on the offside.

According to Hornady, the ideal performance envelope is 1800-2800 FPS. This is the expected speed when the bullet hits a game. Therefore it is not optimal for close shots with high speed cartridges like a 7 mm Rem Mag or a 300 Win Mag. It should be optimal in 6.5 CM, 6.5x55 at any range and in high speed cartridges beyond 150-200 yards.
I have a 145 grains load that goes at 3050 FPS from my Sako and give 0.5 moa accuracy. When sighted in to hit 3 inches high at 100 yards the MPBR +/- 3 is an impressive 345 yards. I would only use it if i have an opportunity to shoot a deer beyond 250 yards, which is very rare in Eastern Canada.

Hello folks, need your thoughts on Hornady ELDX for hunting long range. I have a 7mm Magnum and been using Winchester Ballistic tip 150 grain ammo for hunting so far. I would like to switch to Hornady ELD X Ammo 162 grain for my rifle and wanted to get your thoughts if its a good Ammo, primary reason for switching is the reviews i have read and the heat shield technology that Hornady is using.

I also have a 308 and would like to start using 168 grain ELD Match for hunting

Appreciate if you can share your experiences with this Ammo please

Cheers

Arif

I believe that would be a great choice for your cartridge. They seem good enough for all big game animals in Canada. I will be changing from Nosler bullets to other manufactured bullets, I started already purchasing and stocking-up on Sierra Game Changer. Although around the same price, I would recommend Sierra Game Changer over Hornady. Nosler, have become over the top to expensive.

How fast is a 175 ELD-X at the muzzle from a 7mm rem mag? according to Hodgdon site average around 2800-2850...optimal from 0 out to around 700 yards roughly :)

Yes, The 175 would probably be good, but not the lighter bullets (150 and 162).
