FN heavy cast bullets do a wonderful job of hammering game of any size. The appeal with modern cartridges is trajectory (real or imagined), less recoil (most of the time), lots of widgits and tech to debate over, way less wind drift at longer distances. Big one is we just open the box and play.

I have been mucking with a 45LC out of a Win Trapper. The 325gr FN GC are made from water quenched wheel weights. Very simple and dirt cheap to make. I launch them at 1550fps. At ranges out to 150yds, hitting with open sights is no problem (actually very accurate considering). I would feel confident in dropping all manner of grass eater out to 200yds. Trajectory is going to be steep and sights so so. However, put on a scope with a way to adjust for drop and voila, no different then shooting at 500yds with a 7RM. Recoil in this small light compact rifle is less then a '06 in a standard hunting rifle. For a woods rifle, this is ideal.

The hitting power of this slug is very impressive even by magnum standards and this is a small case/light bullet.

Move up to the 400 to 500gr and a larger case and you have a sledgehammer. Recoil moves up to big magnum levels so for those brave of shoulder, no big deal. Again, out to 250yds, trajectory is really not all that bad. This combo is routinely used out to 500m by BPCR shooters and black powder. With smokeless, you could go further/hit way harder.

I have seen what a 500gr 45 cal RN with a muzzle velocity under 1200fps does at 550yds on a dirt bank (this combo helped to destroy alot of buffalo). It moves alot of dirt. Moving that up to 1700 or 1800fps and you have a cannon. African monster stoppers is 500gr at 2300fps for comparison.

This has no comparison to a slug gun. A soft lead slug from a 12ga doesn't have the penetration potential of a 45 cal slug. Plus the accuracy of a SG is much less then a big bore rifle.

As a moderate range hunting rifle, it has been suggested that a 357 with heavy for cartridge cast FN is equal to the 30-30, the 44mag equal to the 30-06, the 45LC equal to the 300WM. Move up to the smokeless 444, 45-70 and now 450Hornady and you are playing with horsepower.

I would like to find where there are tire shops that give away wheel weights, around here every one SELLS them, the going rate seems to be 20$ for a 5 gallon pail. All the shops also insist on CASH for their used wheel weights, must be for the beer and doughnut fund.

Most will charge as those that make wheel weights want the metal back for recycling.

How heavy is that 5gallon pail? 75lbs? 125lbs? More?

Work back the cost for a 325gr bullet (7000gr per lb). Even better, a 175gr 40cal SWC.

A five gallon pail is damned heavy. Over 100 lbs for sure and maybe as much as 150+. Must confess I've never weighed one...just cursed while lifting them into the back of a pickup. I guess it pays to have a buddy with a tire shop. Still, $20 for a 5 gallon pail...grab it and run!

My 45-70 squeezes out 418 gr cast lead bullets (30:1 alloy) at 1950 FPS. Like Jerry says...sledgehammer.

38-55 lee mould MOLD_SC_379-250-RF , I came in under the 300 gr, but it looks as mean as my 300 gr slugs, I also size it to .378 dia , a nasty deer getter for certain. Lynotype and lead for a semi hard bullet. A good grease job when loading does double duty as a moisture barrier. Oh another which should not be over looked is the Lyman 173 gr mould for that 30-30 Winchester, it turns out wonderful , and is very accurate when sized to .310 dia.

I hope I am too far from a major center to have some one pay money for wheel weights . being a mechinic for a living gives me an unlimited supply from work. nice perk to have for a caster.
If you are using wheelweights for casting watch out for the stickons and the new " non toxic " wheel weights . pick those out before you start to melt .

I have no Idea what the problem with lead wheelweights is I think it is just mindless political correctness. lead is evil now ,don't ya know . If it is so evil I think I am going to go to the garage and try my hand at some lead filing on my project motorcycle then if I am bored I think I will cast some bullets.
