Does anyone hunt with a M-14? Since it shoots .308 it would be a fairly decent cartridge for Moose hunting. It would get heavy after a while of walking the trails, but if you had it in a Gun Boot on the ATV it would'nt be that bad. I have never scene one at a hunt camp, but in the U.S. they use Black rifles alot for hunting.

Hunting With an M-14

I have used an M-14 hunting. If hunting from a stand or blind its OK, but going through the brush is another story, if you don't swear it won't be long befor you are.
I like my M-14, and my 7.62 M1 Garand, but I don't use one for hunting they are just too heavy for me if I walk.
I would use one of them in a blind, but if another person is sharing I will sit on the right side to avoid an empty case wacking them in the face.
I used to hunt with various my AR 15s (when it was legal) and I really liked them.

Work out a little more and it doesn't seem to heavy. Itis the ideal all around cart. for me for deer to moose. I have extra mags for good price, simple to service and reliable as hell. I plan on getting buried with mine!!!!!!

I hunt deer with mine. Pound bush with it too. It's true, it is heavy, but meh... c'est la vie. Would rather have the option for fast followup shots on multiple deer than carry around a little bolt action fairy wand.

One of mine is 14.5lbs unloaded in Boyds wood... the USGI one with just iron sights is 12lbs unloaded...

I spent some time during the 80s hunting with an M14. It weighed 7.2 kg and caused me to develop strong deltoids.

When taking your True/chu wood/poly M14 on a walk about hunting, think about all those boys that humped those types of heavy rifles for months on end in WW11 and later conflicts. Feel proud to carry that weight and experience a day hunting with a rifle that helped earn our freedom to own one now.

I thought that a out of the box M305 or M-14 was about 8.5 lbs? Sounds like thats not the case.

not even close- the m14 spec sheet calls for 11.25 pounds, with loaded 20 round mag and sling- now knock off 1.5 pounds for the mag roughly, and you still end up with 10 pounds , give or take-the wood ones weigh more, as the wood stock is heavier- you might get somewhere near 9.5 if you strip the cleaning kit out of the tail and discount the mag- but really you still end up pretty close to 11 plus and 12-14 if there's a scope involved- of you rig it like a m-60 that distributes the weght better- tell the truth, that m60 nylon sling was used by a lot of operators that had no access to a 60
