Hunting with M-14 ??

I find my Garand way lighter and easier to handle with the WW2 profile stock on it. The M14s are pigs, but I love them...

I dont mind hunting deer with my SKS, its heavier than the average rifle. I was looking for a cool "Macho" interesting Rifle for Moose hunting. Maybe I will just have to suck it up, sell my Model 700 Bolt, hit the Gym and get a M-14. LOL.

I'm not sure changing you Norc M14S stock is the way to go if you're concerned about weight. My M14S with original 'chu' wood, UTG mount, scope, neoprene sling, and 5 round mag (only 3 rounds in the mag) tips my scale at 9lbs. That's about the same as my M700 with scope. The 'chu' wood is actually quite light compared to a walnut or synthetic stock. I replaced the flip up metal butt plate with a rubber one (that saves about 1lb!), and took the junk out of the trunk. :D

I hunt with a Savage 10FCP w/ HS Precision stock, and a Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 4.5-14x40 AO. All told, it's about the same weight as my unloaded M14s. Rest assured that next season, the M14s will see heavy use when I'm pushing bush - with iron sights for fast acquisition and follow-up. If I'm in a stubblefield waiting for a push, or expecting long-range work: the Savage. In the thick of the action, it's gonna be the M14s.

Since the most walking I did while hunting last fall was when I got out of the truck to pee on the shoulder of the road, my M-14 should be just the ticket. It is bad mannors to pee right on the road and I needed to stretch. (my legs)
For Moose, I would go with the Garand with bayonet fixed to lessen the recoil.

A tactical sling and using it properly goes a long way towards making carrying any rifle less of a burden, and having it as close to at the ready as possible. I have a simple, inexepensive sling called a "Safari Sling" and it works well for carrying an m14. Hands remain free, and its a quick lift and shoot when opportunity arises.

I'll be using mine for the quad-gun next season as I don't want to beat up my scoped rifles. As for the few pounds of extra weight as opposed to a bolt gun, back off on the donuts.

If it wieghs roughly the same as my scoped Model 700, thats fine with me. Most of my hunting is done with a ATV anyways so that should'nt be a big deal. I don't mind a couple of extra pounds, definetely worth it when you factor in the "Cool" factor. My wife thinks its ###y anyways when I pop veins in my arms when I carry a gun.

Work out a little more and it doesn't seem to heavy. Itis the ideal all around cart. for me for deer to moose. I have extra mags for good price, simple to service and reliable as hell. I plan on getting buried with mine!!!!!!

Sure aren't aiming for the stars with your burial request are you? There are a hell of a lot better things to be buried with! :p

I like my M305 but I have a long list of things to be buried with before my Norc! I think my LCD TV is in line before!

the pixels will fail or it'll go white long before the norc shows one sign of trouble

I hunted a couple years with my M14S. It is scoped and resting in a USGI fiberglass stock. I use a sling.

I have pushed bush, walked for miles, and never found it too heavy. I love hunting with it. I have met others hunters tha #####ed about the fact that I hunt with one, but they can all kiss my a**.

I do 99% of my hunting with feet/heartbeat and I carried my M-14s around no problem during deer season (looking to fill my second tag anyways:redface:). It's got some weight to it, but you get used to it quick....I wasn't in rugged hilly terrain though.
