Hunting With Milsurp

Anyone hunt with their milsurp rifles? I have a VZ24 in full military configuration and some 220gr loads that I’ve been wanting to try on game.

Obviously it would be for a day with nice weather and stand hunting as it would be a pretty heavy rig for carrying.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on using non-sporterized milsurp in this way?
 
I love using non Sporter mill surplus. Not that the rifle is any better then a cheap sporting rifle (savage or something) it has to be because you like the rifle and like carrying it. I love taking old long lee's out or Lee Metfords hunting
 
I'm using a Swedish Mauser full military trim with the irons in 6.5x55 with 140gr's. Hope to bump into a bear with it. I have much better hunting rifles suitable for the job but as of late i'm getting bored of scoped rifles and would like the challenge and spice life up.
 
I’m planning to deer hunt this fall with my sks. For the closer stands anyway. Just to try something different. Will probably alternate with 7PRC for some contrast haha

Nice! My Mauser is in 8mm with irons, and I was thinking black bear as well. It’s definitely just something more fun and interesting to run out in the bush. Plus the 220gr rounds I have can easily punch through brush if need be.
 
I used a 1915 M95 Steyr in 8x56R one year when pushing deer, did not get a chance to shoot a deer but shot a grouse in the neck with the irons at 50 yards or so :D

I have an m38 Mauser in 6.5x55, it already had the sights taken off it and a scope mounted, it retains the full original stock so I am building what would have been a 1940s sniper rifle out of it for deer. Weighs a lot but settles on target like a dream.
 
I have shot deer with the following Millsurp.
Enfield No4 Mk1
Enfield No5
Swedish Mauser Short Rifle
SKS
VZ 52/57
M1 Garand
 
They work well. I’ve used a Finnish M30 and an SKS for white tail. I also use various .22 trainers for grouse or squirrel as I prefer iron sights. This fall I intend on using a Connecticut contract Peabody in .45-70 for deer.
 
been killing deer and moose and a couple black bears with a lee enfield no1 mkIII sHtle in various forms for over 25years now.
Does the job as well as any other.
While not really a milsurp.... I'll probably hunt with an m14type at least once this fall , under the protection of the amnesty of course "LOL all day long"

Why not?

Using the right ammunition, if you can land the bullet where it needs to, strictly speaking nothing else matters. You might not want to carry it any great distance, but then again, someone else might actually want to carry it a great distance for exactly the same reason. Same reasoning for taking it out in good weather vs. bad, using it to bash through the brush vs. carrying in a soft case to your tree stand, etc.. Your call entirely, just realize that many people enjoy putting these rifles to work regardless of the personal or historical significance they have.
 
I've used No1Mk3, No4Mk1, and an M48 on both bears and deer over the years. Might tote the Mk3 for moose this fall.

this deer is on my wall as a shoulder mount
my dad's 1911 BSA no1 Shtle..... I've take more deer with this rife than I can count off hand.

Got my first deer and moose with the same .303 Br. I retired it after it after the second time it only ejected the head of the cartridge and left the body of the brass in the chamber. That was CIL/Dominion factory ammo. My Dad convinced me something was very wrong and having four years experience with these rifles in Europe I followed his advice. It was an easy decision though as he gave me his which was unissued when he got it. My Mom had bought him one of those new fancy Remington 760's in 30-06 Spr.

There is nothing really wrong with that rifle, they had generous chambers and American factory ammo has really thin walled brass. There is probably no headspace issue, just a massive chamber, I bet that was a No 1 rifle, No 4 rifles are tighter.
