Hunting with mosins.

safe hunting

I find that with one in the pipe the bolt handle will begin to close and then 'notch' at about 30 degrees of travel.
I carry it cradled in the crook of my left elbow, as I can be sure that the bolt is out of battery.

But only when I'm alone, obviously.
Safeties don't do it for me. It's either in battery ( prior to shooting), half #### is fine or empty.
Stay safe

:agree: Tokguy is correct. Nothing safer then a bolt action out of battery while hunting. I can't express this enough. Safeties are redundant in this regard. Not only with Mosins., but with any bolt gun. Steve in Calgary.

I think the Mosin makes as good a hunter as any milsurp. A bit longish but I have a nice M59. A very light firearm that will do 5" at 100 yards with open sights.
I rarely use a safety. The round is up the spout only when I am ready to fire.

chamber a round when you are going to shoot. used a nagant on sea lions for years and it is the safest way.

my tikka m91 has killed dozens of deer (maybe close to 100 during the cwd days) and 20 or so coyotes, always empty chamber. No mater what rifle I am carrying I never have a round chambered until target is spotted. My staple load is 150grain hornady over 50grains of varget at over 3000fps.
