Is it legal to hunt with assistance of a drone anywhere in Canada? Is scouting with a drone considered the same as hunting if there aren't any firearms present. Example, left in the truck for a few hours while aerial surveillance is done.

Surely this will spark some nasty comments so before you lambaste me consider the option of tracking an injured animal after the shot? Surely some value in the drone to ensure the meat doesn't spoil or to ensure the humane kill. What's the consensus there?

I actually asked a local CO about the (region 5/100 mile house BC) and was told it is illegal to use radio contorlled devices, boats, cars, planes and yes, drones.
It's not a new idea. Guys have tried it with remote control camera equiped helos and apparently got charged I was told.
Be interesting to get some facts tho.
I'm sure it will be in each provinces regs or wild life act

In my own opinion, I think it "should" be illegal

In Manitoba it is illegal. And it is posted in the regs. Classified as a vehicle and can not be used for scouting , searching.
Using one after the shot to find an animal is an interesting thought but I don't think there is enough people that own a drone or will buy one just for that purpose. Plus it would have to be wide open field too see anything unless it had heat sensors that could work threw the top of a forest !

So a kite is not radio controlled and when attached to a cam would do a similar job. You probably could leave it up there and get live feed and pan the camera as you need it. And no I have not done any of these myself.

im having a very hard time understanding under what regulations it would be illegal.
its not illegal to drive through the bush on your ATV.

i don't recall anything in the ontario hunting regs that you cant scout with a vehicle, you cant shoot from a vehicle.

Alberta regs, for example, implicitly forbid the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to hunt wildlife in several parts of the regulations, but it is expressly forbidden - for clarity- on page 40 of this year's written guide to the regs. Just because your province's regs haven't been as explicit doesn't mean it isn't implied or intended to be illegal elsewhere in your regs.

And since by definition this is a part of hunting, it would also be illegal.

but you arent hunting you are scouting. Hunting to me is the act of harvesting an animal.

It would likely fall under the "Fair Chase" laws, similar to not being allowed to hunt for x# of hours after a flight in to the bush (I forget how many hours the regs say ...).

Yep....hope buddy doesn't have too much invested in it lol

Tell you what - I'll put my drone in the air, and give you both 5 shots with whatever rifle your carrying to hit it. If you're stupid enough to take air shots with a center fire, and you make contact, I'll throw down my remote and walk away.....

Page 26 of the Ontario regs ( right at the top of the page ):

"Aircraft, including drones and balloons may not be used while hunting. ( see definitions page 86 )"

Page 86:

"Hunting: includes lying in wait for, searching for, being on the trail of, pursuing, chasing or shooting at wildlife, whether or not the wildlife is killed, injured, captured or harassed."

If you want to be a test case, go right ahead.

Last time I checked.... My truck, boat and quad, nor the neighbors pack horse are remote/radio controlled
Big difference LOL

Yes you are correct, was just thinking if the animal takes a while to bleed out due to a poor shot it would be better to find it and harvest the meat than to waste it. Still think it would be impossible to find on a camera
