Hey guys i thought it'd be cool to start a thread about animals you took with either odd calibers, odd firearms or even a milsurp rifle. It would be cool if you guys could post pics of that animal and the rifle and even add a little story.

As for me i took all of my bucks or does with what you would call a normal gun or caliber however i'm working on a little setup for next year and hopefully i'll be able to post pics of it if i get any luck next year!

Cheers
Ray

I hunt with a .303 lee Enfield No.4, full wood stock. I got it as a sporter to do a project. Since the barrel was already chopped, it let me drill and tap for a scope without defacing a milsurp. I put a new stock on it, and it shoots like a hot damn. weighs a little more (ok a lot) then my friends dads hunting rifle, but my theory is our boys drug the Enfield around for six years so I can do it for a few hours. Still no deer or elk yet, it my first year so i have an excuse. I did get a grouse with it though.

I've shot gophers with a 300 win mag. Does that count ??? Not much left to take a picture of.

Seriously though...I've got my great grandfathers Enfield 303 service rifle that I've hunted with. He sporterized it himself....too bad. Did a nice job though.

Hooly crap, and I thought my .308 was a bit much... :D

I plan on building a varmint-specific .221 Fireball sometime in the next year or so. Mind you, that .300 Whisper keeps looking better and better... :D

I've got deer with my M/N 91/30 & my 38-55 was a story this year. Next year I'm going to try for deer with a antique combination rifle( I'm hoping...) in 9.3mm.
I like the less gun, more hunt line of thought. Shooting deer @ 400 yards with the 'Magnum-da-jour" and watching them explode in a spray of blood and hair isn't my thing.
Mind you I just about had to kill mine this year with a sharp stick because of bad luck with bullet placement and dismal performance from factory Winchester loads...
I guess I'm still looking for that happy medium.
Good hunting all

I've been using a sportered 1901 Carl Gustaf in 6.5 55 the last few years to hunt. I'll put up some picks when I have more time. First light is just over a hour away & I still have a WT tag to fill :D

My WTD this year was shot with a 460 Weatherby. I used 450gr TSX loads. Worked very well, lost about 1/8 lb of meat on the far side as I just caught the meat on the front leg. I have used a 416 Rigby in a RSM and a #1 for deer moose and elk for years. Not so weird guns but not that common chamberings. What would be strange in my part of the bush would be a 30-30 or 303. Just don't see them being used anymore. Too bad.

I got my first deer this year and used a 116 year old Winchester 1886 in 45-70. Carrying it around was a feat due to its weight, but it was worth it when I got the deer yesterday.

I have posted my success on this thread already. I shot two Whitetails this season with the 38-55. I have shot a number of deer with my two P14's, one a standard 303 British, the other a 303 Epps. Eagleye.

For a few years, I used either a .303 British or an 8x57, then an 8mm/06, and lately I've been using a .32 Winchester Special. Next year, I plan to use a .303 Savage Model 1899, 1913 vintage. These aren't really "oddball", but certainly aren't the main whitetail cartridges of this day and age.

A well placed shot in the boiler room with the 8mm/06, 150 gr Sierra Game king (I think??) has a rather devastating effect. :p

I hunt deer and pheasants (until I get a deer) mostly with a simson drilling in 12x12 shotgun and 7x65R rifle caliber. Topped with a 2.5x10 Zeiss and QD mounts it is a neat package. Filled my deer tag with it the last few years, still looking this season. Missed a buck while pheasant hunting last week.

I killed a moose with it in 2004. I think that was the only drilling they had ever seen in that part of Newfoundland (Stephenville)

I used a .58 caliber blackpowder rifle on a gopher once. It punched a big hole right thru.
I shot a nice whitetail a few years back with a .375 H&H . Like they say , you can eat right up tothe bullet hole.

My odd ball rifle cartridge that I am using this year is a 21" barreled stainless steel single shot T/C Contender carbine in 375JDJ that shoots a .375" 260gr Accubond @ 2300fps 10' from the muzzle and is still doing 1800fps @ 300 yards.

I have a Vari X 111 2.5-8X36mm B&C reticle scope on it the main cross hair is sighted in 1" high @ 100 yards the first B&C reticle line down held dead on @ 200 yards is 1" high and the 2nd B&C line down is dead on @ 300 yards.

I shot a 6' black bear with it this spring @ appr 80 - 90 yards dropped it instantly...

There are a number of 'odd ball' items I use;
  • 219 Donaldson Wasp in an old custom Winchester High wall with 10X J.UNERTL scope.
  • 7x61 S&H in a Schultz & Larsen.
  • 7x57R/12ga in a Brno OU combination.
  • 308 Norma Magnum in a Schultz & Larsen.
    303Br Jungle carbine
348 WCF in a Winchester model 71 Deluxe
  • 12ga 2 1/2" English SxS
  • 10ga 3 1/2" AYA SxS

When I went moose hunting with my garand three years ago I got some funny looks from the other hunters I ran into. Most of them seemed to really like the rifle, just surprised to see someone out moose hunting with one.
