Hunting with Pistols

I'm sure someone has already asked this, I just coldn't find it.

I just bought a lovely new Raging Bull .44 and I wanted to know if it's legal to hunt with pistols anywhere in Canada. I'm almost positive that it is not legal in Ontario, but I don't know laws in other provinces.

Any help is appreciated.
 
I would suggest that you go back and reread your PAL and RPAL books. For all intents and purposes, a person asking a question like that is only able to fire a handgun at an approved range. It's good to ask questions, but questions like that lead people to worry about the quality of the course you took and your ability to represent sport shooting properly without an understanding of what is essentially, very basic firearms law.
 
The problem is that most (not all) provinces have " no handgun hunting" laws.

If you are in a province with no such laws, you should be legally allowed to hunt with an antique handgun, since the CFO won't issue you an ATT to hunt.
 
BC just has it's minimum 12" barrel rule.
I always thought it was silly because pistols were pistols and long guns were... long.. till the last few years I am seeing 8.5" shotguns, etc :)

I would love to carry my Dan Wesson .357 mag out for a deer hunt. but we are a long ways from changing that one. The registry is a great turning point, but it's going to be a tough fight with a lot of steps if we ever hope to hunt with our handguns.

Just means, keep at it. Little by little if enough people are pushing, it might be possible one day.
 
Short answer.
We USED to be allowed to HGH, but not for about 30 years now.
Both federal and provincial law needs to be changed, and both levels seem to say "Whats the point in us addressing this issue, as the other guys wont allow it."

In Ontario you can legally handgun hunt.....the trick is getting the CFO to give you an ATT to do it.

He can.
He won't.

Ergo: No HGH.
 
Hunting regulations are provincial. Some provinces' hunting regulations prohibit hunting with handguns, so you can't do it there. Firearms regulations are federal and they say you can't take your handgun anywhere without an ATT, and the CFOs act on policy to not issue ATTs to wherever you can hunt, so in the rest of the provinces, it's effectively prevented even if the provincial hunting regulations would allow it.

Canada doesn't have any laws or regulations or policies against taking your handgun out of the country to hunt. Yet. I am sure there are some people in the bureaucracy who will try to enact some if they notice us doing that, but meanwhile, you can try to find somewhere in the U.S. to hunt with your Raging Bull.

Yup, it can be used for hunting, just not here in Canada.
Wasnt that covered in the RPAL course?
Where it Can and Can Not be used and for What purposes?

Nothing in MB hunting regs that I can find about handguns or barrel lenghts, so here I guess the problem is just the ATT BS.
 
I took my 44 Ruger Super Black to Vermont for Wild Boar .... I know they're pen raised but it was still a blast!!

And can't do it at home
 
The really sad thing is you'd get thrown in the slammer if you were caught hunting with a handgun probably longer than if someone slole it from you and commited a crime with it.
