Hunting with Pistols

I'm sure someone has already asked this, I just couldn't find it.

I just bought a lovely new Raging Bull .44 and I wanted to know if it's legal to hunt with pistols anywhere in Canada. I'm almost positive that it is not legal in Ontario, but I don't know laws in other provinces.

Any help is appreciated.

It cannot be done in Canada without a valid ATT, and the CFO's refuse to issue the requisite ATT.

It can be done in most states in the United States, including NIA's, including - but not limited to - Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Buy an American hunting license, apply for an ATF Form 6NIA, renew your passport, and start planning.

I'm going to call them up and try and get an att from my house to my back yard.... see what they say.... seriously....

Seriously ... I'm curious and hope you do and report back to us. I think they won't issue one, but you never know until you try and as I said, just curious, I want to know what they say, especially if they explain more than "no."

Actually a hell of an idea. Ask for an att to your garage where your tools are to work on your gun. If they tell you you don't need one because it's on the same property/address then you'll be doing us all a huge favour. :D

I will call tommorow morning,,, keep in mind my back yard is almost 400 acres....lol... but I will also try and corner them regarding regs when I get the refusal I anticipate....

keep in mind, I ahve no ambition to pistol hunt... but my issue is that I shoulkd have a right to if I wanted to... and hell.. It would be nice to carry my single six with the 22 mag cylinder as a backup when yote hunting....

This was taken from the hunting regulations:
Firearms
Firearms include rif les, shotguns, air or pellet guns, bows and
crossbows. You may use semi-automatic or repeating firearms for
hunting in Ontario, but not handguns that are restricted or prohibited firearms or fully automatic firearms. Air and pellet pistols
with a muzzle velocity less than 152 metres (500 feet) per second
may be used for hunting in Ontario (see restrictions on page 22).

If there is a letter stating the contrary then there is some confusion between this letter and the regulations book.

:bangHead: I have posted it repeatedly here. Read the disclaimer in the regulations. It is a summary and is not to be treated as correct and refers you to the FWCA. The FWCA does not mention handguns. Now do what I did and contact MNR and ask if it is legal to hunt with a handgun. You will get the same written responce that I have which states that you may use a handgun to hunt as long as you use it within the guidlines in the regulations (obviously during a firearms season) and you possess it in accordance with federal law. For those non believers, feel free to read the attached letter.

OK guys... I checked the hunting regs.... they clearly state that you CANNOT hunt with a restricted or prohibited firearm.... I did call and ask out of curiosity what the rules are for walking around your own property with a firearm.... DENIED.... as soon as it leaves your dwelling you ar etransporting and it does not apply to your yard.... unless you take the steps to make your yard a legal registered shooting range.....

That e-mail doesn't say you can hunt with handguns. It says that Ontario legislation isn't the reason why you can't hunt with handguns, but that any hunting with handguns must comply with the federal legislation that regulates possession and use of handguns and by regulating them this legislation effectively prohibits hunting with them. The federal legislation gives the CFO authority to create and follow policy not necessarily specified in the law and its regulations, such as the policy of not issuing an ATT to any hunting ground, and in then complying with the legal regulation requiring an ATT you cannot use a handgun for hunting.

From page 1 of the regulations:

This is a summary of information dealing with hunting licenses and hunting laws. This summary is neither a legal document nor a complete collection of the current regulations. It is meant to be a convenient reference only.

My letter to MNR before that reply specifically quoted that text. MNR doesn't care if we hunt with handguns. The feds do.
