Glass bed the dang things and get 2 inches! Better for close up woodchucks and coyotes. It's a job, but it can be done. Many would say don't bother; dump it and get a different rifle.. It's the challenge though guys... Push the envelope!

Guys, watch the diameters of the bullets you're using. I think the proper diameter bullets give much better accuracy. I would suggest to slug your bores and measure the slugs to indicate the proper diameter bullet to buy and use. I've slugged several and they ranged from .310 to .313. I beleive they oversize bores of high capacity military rifles to keep pressures down, less coppering, barrels cooler, etc. They aren't too interested in accuracy; just volume. Gotta tinker.

Not to start a flame war, but I've yet to see any actual evidence to suggest that the 7.62X39 is the equilavent of the .30-30, anyone care to provide some along with sources?

And I don't think I'd personaly take an SKS out after anything as big as a deer, but dogs and groundhogs would be fun.
Well, accuracy-wise the CZ 858 may be a little more accurate then the SKS but they're very comparable in most respects performance-wise and I can tell you from personal experience that commercial lead-nose 123gr. 7.62x39 out of a CZ 858 will drop a 350 lB. black-bear.

Nowadays, shooters are more familiar with the 7.62x39 than the 30/30.

Here's a quote from Wikipedia on the 7.62x39mm cartridge for hunting. I like the part about the poor person's deer rifle LOL!!

"Since approximately 1990 the 7.62 x 39 mm cartridge has seen some use in hunting arms in the US for hunting game up to the size of whitetail deer, as it is approximately as powerful as the old .30-30 Winchester round, and has a similar ballistic profile. Large numbers of inexpensive imported semiauto rifles, like the SKS and semi-auto AK-47 clones and variants, are available in this caliber, and the SKS is so inexpensive as to have begun displacing the .30-30 lever-action rifles as the new "poor person's deer rifle." Inexpensive imported 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition is also widely available, though much of it is of the non-expanding type that may be illegal to use for hunting in some states. However, there are a number of American civilian manufacturers which produce soft-tip rounds, suitable and legal for hunting."

The SKS is fine for hunting many animals humanely. No caliber can guarantee an immediate death. Those who advocate the latest, fastest, biggest or shiniest cartridge need to stop and think again.
The gullible are good for gun sales. I know someone who hunts deer with a 300 Win Mag at very short ranges.
It would seem hunting is all about fashion these days and posing with rifles, special hunting clothes, quads and monster trucks. For many hunting is more like an excuse to show and tell about all the expensive toys.
I'll just use my lever gun.

The SKS is a fine close range, "truck gun" type hunting rifle as far as I'm concerned. I hunt with mine and it's also my standard "truck gun" when I'm out fishing or whatever. Just don't treat it like it's some long range magnum and it won't let you down.
