7.62x39

The 7.62x39 is an excellent little round .:dancingbanana: It's too bad there isn't a better way to launch them than the POS sks. I guess you could hunt with that piece of crap sks if you have a crate of ammo and a couple high cap mags and the deer stands still long enough for you to rap off a couple hundred rounds.:p

Well, one of these days I'll get around to completing my Stevens 200 7.62x39/.308 project. Both action and barrel are capable of handling 65kpsi, so I figger it'd make a good launcher for 110 VMAX bullets around 2700fps or so. Should be considerably flatter than the HMR

And based on my experiences with XTP pistol bullets in a .308, they'd also make decent coyote busters. Should also be flatter than the HMR

Heck the VC used to kill GIs hiding behind trees with them.

Yes but when you're shooting at an animal you can't afford to NOT kill it right away. If a GI crawls out into the bush and bleeds to death of a stomache wound the VC are happy. But it's no fun to try and find a deer that's been similarly wounded.

Sounds like quite a rocketship, I wouldn't mind havin one myself :p Doesn't NEF make handi-rifles in 7.62x39 these days? We probably don't get them in Kanaduh...

Prosper, I know you've been handloading 7.62x39. Ever tried hot loads? I recently tested 26.5 gr Reloader 7 on 123 hornady. Oh boy, a lot more kicking than the milsurp ammo. My friend took my SKS and dropped an adult bull moose at 125 yards with two shots with my handload which was 25.5 gr reloader 7. The first shot killed the bull already. It didn't make even over 20 yards before piling up. Pretty exciting.

Not to start a flame war, but I've yet to see any actual evidence to suggest that the 7.62X39 is the equilavent of the .30-30, anyone care to provide some along with sources?

This info is from the Remington website. For those who haven't visited it yet, they have a ballistics page where you can compare up to 3 calibers & select from a variety of different bullet weights.

Muzzle Velocity
7.62x39mm - 125gr. PSP - 2365 ft/sec
30-30 Win - 125gr. PSP CL - 2175 ft/sec
30-30 Win -150gr SP CL - 2390 ft/sec

Energy (ft-lbs)
7.62x39mm - 125gr. PSP - 1552 (muzzle), 1180 (at 100 yrds)
30-30 Win - 125gr. PSP CL - 1313 (muzzle), 919 (at 100 yards)
30-30 Win - 150gr. SP CL - 1902 (muzzle), 1296 (at 100 yards)

The Velocity & Energy comparisons actually go up to 500 yards on the Remington site, and they also have Long Range & Short Range Trajectory comparisons up to 500 yards as well, which show how high or low the bullet rises or drops at each distance.

The problem with commercial 7.62x39 is the must be able to accommodate .312 bullets, because - even if you explicitly warn not to - people WILL shoot milsurp. The tactic most manufacturers use is a LONG throat, to give the bullet lots of time to swage down to 308. This = poor accuracy. Whereas, you grab yourself a nice .308 1 in 10 barrel, have it chambered properly, and you've basically got a 30 ppc :D Fast twist contributes to high explosivity on critters on the other end, proper throat contributes to accuracy.

So, IMHO, a bolt 7.62x39 gun is a custom made proposition only

My Yugo took 27.5 gr of RL-7 with no problems (.5 over max load from the Speer manual). I didn't have a chrono at the time and have since sold the gun. EDIT - I suppose I should add that the bullets were all moly'd, which should reduce pressures somewhat over non-coated - It didn't SEEM that much hotter than factory, and I had removed the gas op-rod at the time as I found it improved accuracy significantly (and made it easier to pick up my brass...)

:) Same here. I've found it's very frustrating to chase the SKS brass around, just the pain in the @ss.

I think Yugo SKS might handle the hotter loads better given its heavier weight which gives you way less kicking than the norinco ones. Oh yeah, I could feel the difference while shooting both the factory ammo and my 26.5 RL7 load one after another.

The Yugo w/ grenade launcher can lock the gas mechanism. This should improve the muzzle velocity a bit sacrificing semi-auto mode. Do you think that Yugos can make a decent hunter?

So it seems that we have quite a few SKS hunters here, and I believe all of you(us) guys are as productive as the fussy big-gunners. :D I just put down a wolf yesterday while deer hunting. The bastards were trying to stalk me, and one of them (the one I shot) was trying to lure me. As I said, don't underestimate your quarry. :)
