Hunting with the .30-30, how fast does it drop them?

I am not a fan of open sights. the rear blade cover half the target. A peep sight is faster and more accurate. I put a Williams Foolproof on hunting rifles and zero with the insert and take it out for hunting, so it becomes more like a ghost ring.

On the front I like the fibre optic sight. On the M94 I cut the hood in half, so some of the fibre optic is exposed to the sky. The remainder of the hood still protects the sight.

My experience on game with the 3030 is just 1 shot.
I shot a bison at the incredible long distance of 4 INCHES while his face was in the feed trough. The bullet was found in the feed trough.
Talk about bang, flop!!

Seriously though, 3030 and 7.62x39 share very similar ballistics, the 3030 is just older and more experienced on game, the 7.62x39 newer and more experienced in killing people. Both work well.

This is a bit of a myth. The 30-30 and the ruskie share a similar TRAJECTORY because one is a flat or rounded nose bullet and the other is a spitzer bullet. Generally, the 30-30 will have a LOT more energy at the muzzle and throw a heavier piece of lead. The trajectory is similar because of less aerodynamic bullet that is usually used in a 30-30 because of tubular magazines.

So while the trajectory is often similar between these two cartridges, the 30-30 has significantly superior ballistics.

Doubt it? Single load a 30-30 round with a spritzer bullet and see how they compare :)

A lot depends on the bullet and load. You can look at ballistics table comparisons between the two rounds all day, and the main thing you'll gain from it is a headache. Depending on the bullet and load, some x39 will outperform some 30-30 at both the muzzle and at distance. The opposite can also hold true.

One of the main drawbacks of x39 is that much of the commercial ammo is loaded towards the "light" side, which is fairly typical of commercial production of military based cartridges, which can get fired from such a wide range of age/condition rifles.

But this is getting a bit off topic from the OP's question.

30-30 has been a proven Deer round for over 100 years. I would take a faster, harder hitting cartridge, if I was looking at territory where 150 yard and up shots are the norm. For taking Deer in bushy areas, where 100yard shots are uncommon, and most shots are actually much, much closer than that, 30-30 has a lot of advantages.

Maybe functional, but style counts ya know! Oh well, to each their own.
I'm very happy with the 85 year old win94 I got earlier this year. Shure worked on a nice little 2 point black-tail at 70yrds last month.
