hunting with the 7.62 x 39

Jaywill, that is a factory load that I have only been able to pick up in the states. I bought a box of 500 rounds just to try them out and now am hoarding what I have left. I find that they shoot a tad higher than military ball. I chronied them at about 2200 fps and find that the bullets leave a very nice wound channel. I haven't tried them out of my Rusky Sks yet.

Well said Saskcop. :agree:

Thanks. But it's true. We need to dust off those SKS's and CZ/VZ's and M14's etc and make sure people see them being used for hunting. It needs to become common place. Part of the anti's argument is that those types of guns are not viable sporting rifles. They need to be proven wrong - and ultimately educated - even though I know that many anti's minds are already made up and they don't want to be messed up with facts.

somewhere along the way people[and politicians] decided you can judge how ''dangerous'' a rifle is by the STOCK -not the ACTION,and a semi automatic in a ''military'' style stock ''looks'' dangerous[why a full wood 303 doesn't,I don't know-it was just as ''military'' looking in its age as the SKS is today.
Still and all, I'd prefer to pick up a nice Husky from Tradeex in 8x57 [factory ammunition] or 9,3x57[handloading] for about the same money if it was for moose hunting-but thats just a personal preferance

Can you imagine what the public reaction would have been 60 and 80 years ago if we told the returning war veterans they shouldn't be seen hunting with their 303's?

Hey saskcop, if there are enough people on here from SK and they are willing, we should have a weekend shoot somewhere for SKS, M14,M305 etc rifles. I have an SKS and M14 and am looking to get alot of time in this year with them. I too will be hunting with both of these rifles, sorry no safe queens here....:50cal:

I forgot to mention that I was hunting with a CZ858 with a holosight. It easily can bounce a coffee can at 300 yards with that thing. Geez I wish I could use it for a patrol rifle.... Everyone should have a CZ/VZ 58 as it does amazing things to piss off liberals that have seen me hunting with it. But, it has also given me the opportunity to explain that these types of rifles are very viable hunting rifles and that "looking scary" has nothing to do with the impact of these guns on society. Take your black rifle hunting!!!

I'm a bolt action rifle person through and through; but I could not agree with anybody more than I agree with this statement. If us law abiding firearm owners don't convey to the public that it not the guns that are the evil, but the criminals, we deserve to loose our rights and freedoms. Show people that your semiautomatic rifles are valid hunting rigs by using them as such; down south, they are successfully doing this by hunting with their ARs.

I agree, we need to use them in a responsible open manner so people look and see the firearm as a tool which is really all it is. A firearm does nothing without the action of another force, just like a knife can slice bread or decapitate someone. Sorry for the reference but look at the damage a small knife in the wrong hands has done. Hmmmmm the only firearms in that situation were the ones the police had drawn. Look at the Luther College holdup here in Regina, it turned out to be a pellet gun so are we gonna ban them too?? The problem is responsibility for ones action and not the firearm. Lets put our laws on steroids and put these people away and stop add more restrictions on the law abiding ones like us gun owners.

I have a Chinese SKS in a dragonov stock with nice metal drop mags. I have shot a lot of deer with it. They don't go far either. I am using the wolf soft point ammo that was mentioned eirler. I bought 500 rounds a few years ago at Cabelas in East Grand Forks. Still have prolly 100 or so left. Saving those for just hunting. Semi autos with iron sights and tuff stocks are nice going through the bush and up trees. No worries about scratching the finish or damaging the scope or anything like that. Still like taking out my dressed up rifles, it all depends on my mood.

Seeing as how the search engine doesn't go back more than a year here are a couple of old treads related to this subject:

This is a nice little buck that fell to the 7.62x39 in a Ruger M77mk2:

The shell isn't a bad round its just inaccurate at distance with the short barrels of some of the Mil type guns like my SKS. I am sure my M14 will be more accurate than my SKS but I will have to wait till my M14 shows to try that "theory" out for real. Still want to take the SKS for deer and varmit.
