Hunting with your "precision" rifle

Bring the right tool for the job. My precision rifle goes moose hunting up north in huge cuts that can be thousands of yards big, 3-500 yards is the norm and nobody is trekking through thick brush dogging. We call and wait and shoot from a good rest at longer ranges typically never less then 100 yards. My area I hunt for deer has mixed bush and swamp with hayfields no longer then 100 yrds, I use my marlin 30-30. I am walking around more and shooting offhand. They both excel at their specific tasks and I would not take the 30-30 to my moose area and I would not lug my 14 pound precision rifle around the swamp. So long as you can make an ethical kill with whatever you choose that's the important part.

Yes, well it could go the other way too.....lets say the buck of a life time is across an open field at 500 yards with no way to close in on the distance....and you look down at your trusted '94 30-30 with open sights and silently say to yourself.....maybe next time!

nope. I say, your mine and the hunt begins. thats called spot n stalk my friend.

lol don't take "true hunter" as contex. How about "experienced hunter"

Don't get to bent out of shape. In my opinion there is no advantage in lugging a heavy rifle just because it can put 5 shots in a dime. If a rifle can not shoot accurate enough to hit the kill zone of a deer.... Get a new one.

First of all I don't consider my 16 lb AI rifle a tgt rifle because it's not. Its a purpose built rifle designed to be used in the field under various conditions, unlike a target rifle. The highlighted portion also totally contradicts itself. Everyone also has their opinion, it isn't wrong just because it is not the same as yours.

Nice thread.

I've been thinking about using my Savage Model 10 heavy barrel .308 for hunting. It has a 1:10 twist so it loves the 168 grain match bullets. I don't want to drop the cash on a new rifle so I was thinking about using it this fall. The closest thing I could find in hunting bullets for my reloads were 165 grain bullets which will get tested tomorrow. I won't change the powder charge and see how it performs.

I might change my mind after a day of walking around with it?

So much depends upon distance being traveled and terrain being crossed as well as fitness/experience of user. As EC says, he has no trouble carrying a custom in AICS or an AI but for many this would be a real challenge. While I could ( I think ) carry a precision tactical rifle on a moderate hunt I know I'd be far more comfortable with my Rem XCR II in 30-06 with a Zeiss 3-9 than in the PGW COyote with a 12-50 S+B :)

I bring my Savage 10fp varmint challenge top place holder, to my deer hunts

It is heavier than some for walking around, however having the ability to make your shot when you get that small chance is all that matters.

jokes aside - I am looking for decent sling options for carrying my Remington 700 in Eliseo stock, and my Savage 10ba. Both are my hunting rifles, scoped and loaded are close to 15lbs. Both do not sit well and very unbalanced for traditional slings. I do still hunt mostly, but getting into a good position is quite some work. Weight isn't a problem, but both rifles need a good sling. I am thinking about stitching my own to work exactly I want it too. Or tethering to the vest maybe, not sure yet, need extensive field testing.

All Long Range rifles, Started off as hunting rifles at some point, just with a heavier barrel installed and adapted from that. All depends what you want to lug around.

I would be looking seriously at something like an Eberlestock carrier, or a Tasmanian Tiger G82 pack.

They're both a great way to transport heavier rifles through bush:

I've used both, and lugged some pretty monstrous rifles a lot further than I thought possible using them.

I have a ATRS rifle with an mcmillan A2 stock and a m40 profile barrel finished at 22" that I use for hunting. I would say the rifle weighs 15-16 lbs and I use a Tab elite sling that works excellent!!! It took a while to get in and was pretty expensive but you can tell that it was built to last.

Your welcome. I think you can only get a tab sling from a few places but the elite sling I think you can only get from rifles only. The elite comes with the cobra buckles as appossed to the plastic ones.

Why yes...
'Nothing more gratifying than shooting 10 cent rodents with a $2700 set up LoL

I used my late Remington LTR 308 for my deer hunt late fall and it was a perfect fit. Topped with a PST 6-24250 it tipped the scale at about 12 lbs, a bit heavy for some I know but worked well for me.
Have sold that one in favor for a Savage 10PC 308. Im sold on the short (20in), fat and fast twist barrels, best all around package IMHO. Going to be rebarreling the Tikka T3 300WM with the same when the time comes.
