Hunting wolves

Not a maybe, members of this forum are employed in doing so. Couple years ago over a hundred were shot around Grande Cache in a couple weeks for instance. The cull is the reason Miley Cyrus recently came to BC to protest and mourn for the victims of the helicopter culling. I have a lot of pictures of kills on woodland caribou, moose, and wood bison taken from the heli I share with the hippies on my wife's Facebook. Seeing them with just the butt and nose eaten, then left to freeze does alter thinking surprisingly.

Wolves aren't evil, they're just being wolves. There's a lot reminiscent of human nature in how they behave, too. The hippies choose to see the good side of that, and the hunters see the dark side of it. I personally see the culls as a necessity, and actively assist, however I do have empathy for them. Nature's rough and culls are a necessary part of it when warranted.

By "maybe" I wasn't questioning what you were saying. More so meant they are not taking care of this issue in other areas of the country where it's needed.

Well aware wolves are not being evil and just being themselves. However, they do need to be dealt with from time to time. Just like some people.

Fur trapping is the best tool we've got, country wide, it is in decline however. Still going strong in the north and west but generational and cultural changes are creeping in.

yup.... agreed
I have been pondering asking the canim band for permission to run a trap line up the mountain out back. LOTS of sign of furry critters and appears that no one is trapping the area.

Working hard on my line to control predator populations. Weird weather seems to have messed with the wolves this year though. Not a single wolf caught this year as they just seemed to have vanished after the start of the season. Figure they must have found a decent food source elsewhere since I've not seen a single track in over a month.

I just bought an older snowmobile so I can get back into the bush further to hunt coyotes/wolves etc where there is less pressure.

Snowshoeing in from the road has got tiring I'll still snowshoe in from the sled but I plan on being 10 - 20 klms in from the road.

Any of you guys in the know have any thoughts on what depth of powder snow would be max to find the beasties so I don't waste my time going to high.

No real limit, they'll just start using their trails more, and rivers, which is a benefit. Wolves are just like us, they want easy going and long sight lines. Edge of lakes, rivers are your best bets. Down south I'm sure they'd use power line right of ways.

Thanks for the info Ardent totally appreciate it.

My plan now is to buzz around areas like you are suggesting and look for tracks when I find them park the sled snowshoe in a bit and set up my Foxpro FX3 E caller and decoy.

I just talked with a CO buddy of mine realized I didn't know the rules/laws for hunting off of a snowmobile I do now = same as any other vehicle.

Need to license and insure the snowmobile and I'll be ready to go.

We had a winter up here a few years ago with some areas having four to six feet of light snow, didn't stop the wolves they killed a dozen bison in one valley in two weeks. You'd swear they're swimming in it not running when you see them from the air, the porpoise through it extremely quickly. Saw a wolf just today, much different snow this year- there almost is none!

All you need is bait, quiet access and patience.. If they are in the area of course.
Dead cows work great, they can't just grab a limb and run off, they really need to work for every frozen piece. That and they'll know there's food to come back to for their next meal. Check with your local farmers if you know any, after fall sales is usually the best time to get old breeding stock with abnormal growths n what not.
Road kill can be an alternative, but I'd check on the laws first. (I have never had to.)
Best to walk in an hour before day light and a couple hours before dark, wind is good. It's hard to sneak up on a wolf on a calm day.

Good luck to you.
I didn't read every post, so maybe this won't be any help at all.

Don't hunt wolves yet but that sounds like a blast! Need me one of those snow machines myself.

Got out on my first hunt with the snowmobile a 1998 Skidoo Formula Z 670cc yesterday this is only my 4th time out on the machine since I bought it two days before Christmas paid $1400 and it only had 1856 klms on it there's appr 120 more on it now already.

Problem I had is I had such a fun time riding around and it was so freaking cold that I never set up just explored looking for tracks.

I also have now ordered a Pelican sled to drag behind to put my gear in so I don't have everything strapped on behind me and I'm going to bring a white tarp to throw over the machine when I park it.

Super clear & sunny and I heard later appr -30 C try going 100 klms/hr in that temp and you will know what cold is. :)

This pic is from just before dark at the end of the day I'm about 15 klms from the truck.

Monday's Hunt. Found a dead horse. Not often you stumble on handy bait. The wolves had been there and had a regular path beaten, but only 3 coyotes and ravens there when I arrived, along with a Golden Eagle. Went back early this morning, but just more of the same. Very Photogenic this morning, but I left My camera behind for the stalk, Damn it. :)
