I am thinking about a job offer in the big city of Yellowknife. Does anyone know how the hunting is their? The guys interviewing me over the phone only fish and know there is a Caribou hunting ban but think you can get a Moose every year (I did not ask about bear). I don’t think this would be a deal breaker as I would probably come back to Ontario for deer. What big game seasons (and small) are there in Yellowknife I could hunt next fall?

I moved to Inuvik in March 2010. Can't wait for the upcoming season!!! 2yrs has been a long time but boy it's going to be worth it!

I lived in Inuvik for 4 years, some of the best times of my life, wish I never came back to Ontario. I ended up declining on the position as I could not justify the move right now due to personal reasons. Maybe one day in the future I will get back up in the north and out of Ontario again.

This sucks, I was thinking about asking to get posted to Yellowknife, but screw waiting 2 years to hunt...

I could be wrong but I think that as a military you may be exempted of the two year waiting period. Just like when you're posted from one province to another, you don't need to do the hunter's education, CORE,etc, all over again.

All you need is a letter from your OC stating that you got posted from another province, then you go to the MNR office with this letter and your outdoors card. They will issue you with an outdoors card from your new province of residence.

As a serving member, it is not always your choice to get moved around so I think this restriction should not apply. A bit like the army will pay for your reconnection fees for phone, cable, Internet, etc. Since it's not your choice to move and you wouldn't have to pay for this if you weren't in the army.

I'd look into that if I were you. I wouldn't be surprised to find out this rule doesn't apply to military personnel.

You can shoot a moose every year, wolves are unlimited (just keep buying tage) and you can get a bear every year. You can also shoot woodland caribou and there is great sheep hunting in the Mackenzie Mountains that does not require a guide. All in all the hunting up here is still pretty good despite the Barren Ground caribou ban.

I wouldn't live in Yellowknife if I could avoid it. It's not the same town that it was when I grew up there in the 80's and 90's. When the gold mines closed the soul went out of the place and I don't like what it's turned into. I lived in Inuvik and Aklavik and loved every minute of it but down here near YK is a whoile different story.

Look for a job in the Yukon. It's "ever better" than the NWT.:D

@BigUgly, have you hunted sheep in the Mackenzies? Send a PM, I am doing a fly-in or 2 this summer and as you might imagine, I am scamming everyone I can for info :D

I haven't been up there, unfortunately. Some of the guys from YK have and a guy that I know in the Wells too, but I've not have the chance.

I miss Inuvik. Enjoyed my time there.
