More than just a couple nice bears taken in beautiful country with good company, we also glassed many goats, including a couple real dandies... and a 500+ pound black bear feeding on berries atop a "hill..." we watched that big bruiser for hours until he finally topped out and moved over to the other side...
 
I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread even though I don't hunt bear. The scenery is very much the same as Vancouver Island. Looks like you had a great time. It's a beautiful area you got there Ardent.

Yes there are Grizzlies, they swam over from the mainland, not many though. I've never seen one on the Island. One was seen near Sayward which really isn't far from Campbell River. The last I heard there were about 6 on the Island.

I didn't mean hunting by yourself, I meant guiding instead of hunting.

Trapping with a partner adds to the experience. Not enough money to go around, but its great to have someone with you when a marten or wonder weasel is in the box. Several friends and my son walked or sledded my line with me last winter. I got company, they got to experience a bit of what most will never see.

Having raised three kids into outdoor pursuits and guided many new hunters to their first big game animal, and having taken many, many animals with archery gear over the past 35+ years, I can honestly say that I believe that these days, I would prefer to experience the exhuberance of a new hunter taking a nice animal, to taking the animal myself... not that I don't thoroughly enjoy the pursuit and harvesting of game, but my fondest memories are of the successes of my children and aging father and new hunters/friends (Jim)... this one will be reflected upon warmly.

I never thought of guiding in that way
that would be fun with the new Huntress I try to take out as many new hunters as I can
Kind of makes me wish I would've gotten into guiding
 
This was Jim's first big game animal, neat way to start, as Hoyt starts to illustrate he's a pleasure to guide and work with, just loves being out. He took the 7'9 "small" bear, which has a 24 1/8 Boone & Crockett All Time book noggin. Not sure if you can tell in the photo but one of the bears ears is barely attached, he was a fighter.

The flash in that photo highlighted our bad sunburns... we spent the day before glassing from an open gravel bar in full, unrelenting sunlight.

Nobody that I know of has the "weather luck" that I have... I don't deserve it, but it just seems to work out that way... Ardent was positive that the Northwest coast was going to humble me and my "cocky" attitude... nope.

You are asking the wrong person... twer I all alone in the big piney woods with only squirrels as on-lookers, I'd be embarassed to carry that abomination.

Ardent is able to articulate a number of factors to be praised... however, whenever he expressed them, all I could hear was "blah, blah, blah..."
