hello,

Just posting to see if there are any cgn'rs on here from the Huntsville area.

I'm interested in finding out about the whitetail deer population in this area and to see what kind of size/quality you see. I'm sure there aren't as many as where I hunt now but you never know :)

Also interested in Moose and Black bear as well.

I just bought some land in the area. Thanks in advance.

I hunted in that general area for years (other peoples places) and had great success. A good guide is to get the Ontario Hunting Regulations book and look at last years stats for tags issued and game taken for your WMU. We hunted closer to Baysville mostly, but also at Vernon Narrows and north Huntville area. It's excellent whitetail country! If you've got any further questions, don't hesitate to PM me or if you wish I'll give you my phone number. Good luck to you! Lawrence

thanks for the info,

I was hoping there would be a good whitetail population, sometimes it's either moose or deer but not both. the property is near Novar.

I have been looking on the MNR website as well but it's nice to get info right from the guys who hunt the area as statistics are what they are :)

I have hunted moose in Magnetewan area and bear on the Mattawa but neither around Huntsville.
I'll send you a pm shortly.

There are lots of deer and bear near Novar, and a few years back we did moose hunt north of there, but success was not great.
We owned 50 acres north of Baysville at the time. Absolutely polluted with deer. Lots of bear too.

NOVAR!!!!! I used to have a cottage on Bitttern Lake, just west of Novar about 20 min. from the foodland. Sadly, had to let the place go some years back, but it's good deer country. Not as good as the Baysville area, but still good hunting. If you don't do your own butchering, check out Luptons off Muskoka Rd 2 (Brunel Rd) just out of Huntsville heading toward Baysville. Lucky you!

Our familie's hunt camp used to be in Novar as well, about a half hour drive out Boundary Road. No electricity, water, etc. Out of the way enough to not be bothered by idiots although a neighbour's "cottage" got broken into a couple times, nothing stolen, just looked like someone kicked the door in, lit a fire in the stove, and stayed for a day or so. Our place got broken into once as well, and they stole our chainsaw and a couple other minor things. Just make sure that you insure it as a dwelling with contents if there's a building on your new property!

Anyway, in regards to game, we frequently saw deer and moose on the property. The only moose i ever saw was a HUGE bull that pretty much walked around like he owned the place, but there were always lots of tracks and sign. As far as the deer go, the deer are a little smaller than what i've seen elsewhere, but once in a while you'll see a big one. Porcupines and raccoons in abundance. Not too many bears out by our place though. There were lots of grouse, ducks, and I would assume that the squirrel population has recovered by now as i haven't been out there since i was about 12 :) We even had a few dealings with a lynx and a pack of wolves.

Deer pops really took a beating in Muskoka - Parry Sound lately. The winters of 07-08 and 08-09 were pretty hard on them. Thankfully 09-10 was very mild with not much snowfall. I think things are looking up. Im seeing deer almost like I did a few years ago when we were polluted with them. Size wise, bodies can be very respectable; we shoot deer that dress at 200 lbs fairly often. Antlers arent as big as other places, but my camp has taken some 150s and one 160 that I remember (im 24)

Bears? Yep.

Moose - My camp usually has no problem filling a bull tag if we draw one (we usually have 12+ guys). My camp isnt far from Novar "as the crow flies"

In your backyard
Bankroft - how u spell it ? and Madoc for the season for deer ( BOW )
Already missed the Moose tag but still ( may be ) If I could afford
For Gun I move to another backyard 63B (Hope Town)

great, thanks for all the info.

yeah, B&E's are always an issue if you aren't there year round. We won't leave anything of value until I move there permanently. If someone needs to stay the night in an emergency I'm fine with that and will probably leave the door unlocked.

I'm glad to hear the deer population is recovering, I hunt shotgun and bow where I am now (and there are some big bruisers), but I've always wanted to rifle hunt whitetail for some reason.

I have been going up to a place a couple of K's from highways 60 and 35 (few minutes east of the town of Huntsville) since 2006 or 2007. The more that I think about it the more I think my first year there was fall 2007, and I think that was the first of 2 bad winters that we had. Anyway, that first year I was up there there was an incredibly large deer population. It was like the place was infested with deer, just unreal. The next year that I went up there were very few deer to be seen and almost no sign. There was a very large crash in the population. The numbers were up this past fall, but nowhere near where they used to be. Same thing up in 63A. I know parties of 4 - 8 guys who used to get a deer each every year without fail, now they have been getting one for the party if they are lucky. Some parties have been getting none and these are all very experienced guys. However, I would hunt the area if I were you and had a good place to go, not trying to discourage you, just saying! From what I have heard from other guys the populations of deer that live on and around farmland were not nearly as affected as those that live in the bush exclusively.

Good luck up in 50 if you go, it's beautiful.

I've hunted in wmu 49 for years.
The last 2 years have not produced the number of deer we were acustomed to seeing.
My uncle who lives there tells me that the #'s are better this year though.(fingers crossed)
The last couple of seasons we could have filled a moose tag if we were hunting moose.
Good luck to you.
Eric
