Husqvarna 1640 Extractor

My 30-06 has an extractor that looks similar to the Mauser m98 style.

The previous owner ground down the hook on the extractor, so the empty falls off in the action. Does not eject. This would be nice on a target rifle, where i want to recover each piece of brass, not not so good on a hunting rifle where a second shot is occasionally called for.

Where can I get a Husky 1640 extractor?

I'd check site sponsor intersurplus. They took tradex's large inventory of swede stuff, and they have a mountain of huskies. They can probably dig up something for you.

I am comparing a good 1640 bolt to the problem one.

In the good bolt, a case snaps into place. You can wave the bolt around, and the case stays put.

With the problem bolt the case is loose and falls off. I assume the extractor hook has been modified. Maybe the owner wanted to be able to close the bolt on a chambered round?

It is quite doable to have the best of both worlds. A nice chamfer on the front, to allow closing the bolt on a round in the chamber, and a full length(width?) hook that will hold the case securely.

Not if there isn't enough clearance in the receiver cut out for the extractor. That's a very precise job and not one to be taken lighlty.

That may be the reason for the issue Ganderite is experiencing.

Ganderite, if you have a 96 Mauser, compare it to that on your 1640, they might be interchangeable with just a bit of modification or if you're very lucky, it may just slip onto the Husqvarna 1640 bolt. Have you compared it to a 98 extractor????

The 1640 is basically a small ring mauser but I don't remember if it's designed around the 96 or the 98.

Different dimensions than a M98. Very similar to a M96. Looks like it cold be made to work.

If you just need a few thousands to hold securely you might be able to modify the extractor. There is a rib on the extractor that rides in a groove around the bolt body. The rib keeps the extractor from moving too far inward. Take a few thousands off to let the extractor move inwards for a tighter grip on the case. Go easy, a little goes a long way. Extractor tension may be lessened a bit, the extractor may also hit a lug, see how things work before modifying.

It may or may not be enough, but you are already considering a new extractor so it might be worth a gamble.

I think I may have a spare 96 extractor and would have sent it to you but if Intersurplus, great people to deal with have one in the mail for you that's an original part and very likely doesn't require any fiddling, that would be the best option.

That is a great idea. I will try that when I take the extractor off when the new one arrives. This might give me a spare extractor. I have 5 of these rifles, so a spare is a good idea.

Even if it hits a lug, you can always grind away the material on the extractor to clear, good idea.
