Husqvarna 648 in 8mm mauser (FN Commercial 98)

...say what? Now I'm genuinely confused.

This simple:

You cautioned that in your opinion the 8x57 recoils heavily.

I quoted you, and opined that heck no, it doesn't, and is well known as a very well mannered and tame hunting cartridge.

Something ensued about you not asking me for my opinion, fish, and inherited .308 Norma Mags. Where I get confused is when I reread the counter opinions I posted to yours, nowhere am I attempting to answer a query of yours; just correct what I feel is for any hunters I know inaccurate slandering of a super mild and well mannered cartridge. My wife is 115lbs, not a terribly frequent shooter, and my old 8x57 is the first centerfire hunting rifle I select for her, to hear it labelled a 'kicker definitely cocks my eyebrow.

How do you define my comment "a bit of a kick" and then suggest it to be "strong recoil" and then further add "heavy recoil" to your comments about my original "bit of kick"?

You cautioned that in your opinion the 8x57 recoils heavily.
I did no such thing. Has a bit of kick does not cross over to recoils heavily.

No where did you quote me on me saying heavy recoil.
And the only slandering Ardent is your comments about what you think/feel I stated.
There is nothing confusing about the term a bit of kick.
You only make it confusing to yourself.
And thinking and feeling are two different words and mean two totally different things.
You think with the brain and feel with the heart.
So go back to a bit a of kick and see if you can get a handle on it???

Your concept of the terms in the english language seem to fail you Ardent.
My apologies if you think I pissed in your cornflakes.
I can't compete with this recoil terminology.
You win Ardent.
I gracefully bow out.
Cheers......................

I think recoil is relative to the shooter and firearm itself (stock design etc.). My father didnt' think his 8x57 kicked at all until I started reloading for him yet I still dont' think it kicks that hard..plastic butt pad and all .

I dont' think its possible for everyone to agree on "what kicks hard and what doesnt'" . I know im pretty sure that my 45-70 kicks pretty hard pushing 500gr. loads around 1500 fps. :D

No matter how you slice the banana, an 8x57 Mauser and a 30-06 are very nearly the same calibre, and a hair more power than a .303 British or a 308.
Very similar bullets travelling at very nearly the same speed. Therefore, about identical recoil.
Felt recoil varies from rifle to rifle, with very much depending on the fit of the rifle and the shape of the stock.
But, if one were going to classify one of this group as being of very light recoil, then they all would fit that same designation.

Yup, right on the money.

Speaking on recoil in particular, the 8x57 JS is "usually" a mild cartridge to shoot, but that's also because it is usually underloaded, and so often found in full wood K98's which are a little heavier than sporting rifles with 22" bbls. However, will full powered handloads in both calibers, and in similar rifles, I can't see anybody being able to tell the difference between the 8x57 JS and the 30-06.

Ardent's information on the efficiency of the x57 cases being valid, of course.

In regards to the OP - sounds like a good rifle to me; I doubt you'd regret buying it. Just do the 8x57 JS some justice and shoot "real" handloads in it when hunting, and not nuetered factory ammo.
