Got a Husqvarna Vapenfabriks 9.3x62 built on a M98, but the spot for the scope bases are confusing me. There's a sort of dovetail cut into it... what is supposed to go there? I can find a bit of information about claw bases, but is that it? If it's some proprietary BS, what other mounting options have people had success with? Hopefully that cut doesn't prevent other D&T options.

I’m thinking like you, used to be a claw mount of some sort in there. Never seen anything like it yet.

The front base shouldn't be too much of a problem. A PITA to be sure, but not too problematic.

You could put in a matching dovetail blank that's ground to the right radius to match the ring and braise it in place. Drill and tap, and you'd be GTG. M98 rails are costly (ca. $100-120) but not killer.

Skinner sells the blanks: https://skinnersights.com/products/dovetail-sight-blank
That’s what I would do!

This is probably something like what they used to look like -

After some measurements, the cut into the reciever is a unique European style, and doesn't conform to anything easily available on the market. The dovetail measures 11.6mm at the narrowest, and ~14mm at widest. From base to apex, approx 3.8mm. Not exactly gunsmith tools, but you get the idea. There are companies out there that make bases which would fit, but require gunsmithing to grind into the right fit. Frankly not worth the cost. Unfortunately there's only 22mm of reciever unmolested to work with for a more conventional base. Typical weaver mounts look to need about that much between holes, leaving not enough mental. I could bridge that gap if I want to get creative. Leupold makes some 2pc M98 bases that clear the charger hump, and I could slide the base so that one hole is on one side of the gap, one on another.

Worst comes to worst, sidemount is a potential option

Standard Euro drilled and tapped models should give you about 21.7 mm center to center on the front base.

Warne bases accomiplish that +/- a few tenth/mm. So, that should leave you roughly 3.5 mm on both sides of the dovetail which would be good enough for a 6-48 drill & tap, IMO...

I'd personally go with M3.

My old Husky '98 FN Commercial action has a German made QD side mount, which is surprisingly robust and repeatable. You also can still see the irons undernith.
