Hello. I was checking out one of the ads on cgn and found some husky m96 rifles for sale. Is the m96 ok in 9.3x57. From what I can find these actions are weaker? I am kinda new here so I hope I am not repeating former posts. I want to have a good rifle for moose and read that the 9.3x57 was used alot for them. i want an older rifle with wood aka real stock and I don't want one of the new wsms. I love my old 303 so want another oldy for it's partner. Thank you.

The 9,3x57 was known in Sweden as "den gamle påtatenkaster" ("the old potato-chucker") because of the big bullet at moderate velocity. I have a Model 46A and it's really a lovely old rifle.

There are several folks here on CGN, such as "Baribal" who are very knowledgeable on these. Also check out the Swedish Civilian & Sporting Firearms section on forums.gunboards.com as there is a ton of info there, including quite a lot of reloading information, some done by folks here in B.C.

Cllick on the sponsor's link at the top of the page for "TEC Trade Ex". Anthony usually has lots of Husqvarna rifles on his site in 9,3x57 or/62. I've not bought from him personally, but the feedback he gets on CGN is really positive.

In short, if you're tempted, GIVE IN!

I would not worry about the 9.3x57 round in the 96 small ring action, they aren't loaded up too hot (or rather, they shouldn't be). It's a short range sledgehammer.

Good moose thumper, but pretty much a handloaders round. Tradex has Norma ammo, but at $60/box...

I have the husky 9.3 x 57 & absolutely love it ! I have owned many rifles new & old the 57 is my baby! A great moose cal thumps them real hard!

how similar is the 8x57. I find that there are more ammo available for the 8 than the 9.3. How would the 8 be on moose with factory ammo?

8x57(aka 8mm Mauser) would be my choice over the 9.3 simply for ammo availability.

If your gonna be reloading then stop playing around and go with the 9.3x62, and make your own brass from all the 30-06 kicking around! ;)

WhyNot has a few threads on this round, and I have been made a believer. He has a thread about fire forming brass from 30-06 as well I believe. Definitely worth a look.

Not hard to do at all. Have a buddy here who is on his third reload of the same Federal 30-06 brass. I have some Winchester that has been loaded six times.

Having said that, it is duck soup simple to reform 8X57 brass to 9.3X57.

8x57 shoots a bit flatter. I haven't owned one in years myself (same with 9.3) but the Remington factory load was okay, very mild load (must've been developed by lawyers). Took a fat doe with it once, dropped like a rock. I imagine with reloads it would be able to push 170's quite a bit quicker, if your talking about a commercial action.

Quite probably. The 8x57 came in two bullet sizes over the years, originally (?) .318 then .323. I think the latter size is now standard but in N.A. the 8mm factory loads are conservative in case someone loads one in an old 8mm rifle with the .318 bore.

north american factory 8mm mauser is pretty much the same as the 30WCF. european stuff is a lot better, but really both the 8 and the 9.3 are for the reloader.

You may have to turn the necks if do 9.3X57 cases from 30-06, as some HVA rifle chambers have very tight necks.

Interesting you should mention this. I know Daryl S had this problem with his, and mine has a similar problem. Fortunately it's just fine with jacketed bullets but when I tried loading some Bullet Barn cast bullets, they wouldn't chamber! This was using 8x57 Remington brass which had been resized to 9.3. (Can't remember where I got this but it may have been from Buffalo Arms in Idaho before the export rules changed.)

I recently bought an adjustable reamer and reamed the inside of the necks (as it seemed easier and cheaper than getting a dedicated neck-turning tool to do the outside). I haven't had a chance yet to try out the few loads I made up but I hope they're OK. I don't have the measurements right in front of me but I think the max. my Model 46A throat will take is .394. As I recall I had to ream nearly 3 thou. off the necks to meet that OD!
