husqvarna m96 in 9.3x57

how similar is the 8x57. I find that there are more ammo available for the 8 than the 9.3. How would the 8 be on moose with factory ammo?

The 8MM is another hard hitting cal when you reload for it. Last year a shot a moose with winchester weak ammo at 60 yards, took the first shot hit, the moose started running then i reloaded then took another shot and then dropped dead in its tracks.

I also Prefer the 8mm more since you can find all sorts of rifles in that cal and ammo can be bought anywhere.

Dont get me wrong i do like the 9.3x57 and will be using it on Moose this year.

Stuart,

Both the M/46 and M/46A chambers typically have tight necks. M/146 usually are a tad wider. I don't have the numbers in hand for now, but commercial ammunition fired in those usually show very little expansion, actually just enough to have the bullet relased.

Thanks, Baribal.

Continuing to be slightly OT, it seems Remington brass is o/s just about everywhere. (Well, Henry @ Budget Shooter Supply says "ETA unknown", Midway is O/S until August; not that we can buy from them anyway). I have the option of Winchester or Prvi. Any preference between these?

Well, I used (and actually, still does) 8X57 W-W brass in the days 9.3X57 Metallverken and Norma weren't availlable, and since I have a bunch of those, I don't use much anything else now.
While many people have claims against W-W brass, I personally don't when it comes to "standard" calibers (derived from 8X57 i.e. 30-06, 308). PPU is also good, actually better than many thinks. So, the choice is yours, my opinion is "get the cheapest".
