Hey all. I had an interesting conversation the other day with a good friend about certain rifles we wanted and we got talking about old hasqvarna rifles. I prefer the 98 over the 96 while my buddy agrees he has a dislike for the newer 1600 series whereas I really couldn't care whether it was an fn action or not. I'd use it for hunting. I've fired a 146 and 640 as well as a 1600 series. This got me thinking what exactly is the difference between a 146 and 1600? Both are chambered in the calibers of interest I believe. (30/06-9.3*57)

As a side note how would one compare against a Parker Hale just for interest sake?

146 - Original 98 action, palma barrel contour, schnabel stock, available in 9.3x57 only.
1600 - HVA 1600 (96/98 action hybrid), tapered barrel contour, various stocks, various calibers.

We need a control to compare. What are you using it for?

Parker-Hale what?

Brybenn,

Just to straighten things, the 146 was only chambered in 9.3x57. Apart the 1640, only the 640/1000/1100 were chambered in '06 and the 1640 were never made in 9.3x57.

Now regarding the actions themselves, the 1640 is a compound of both m/98 and m/96.
It uses the m/98 action lenght, #### on open and the three lugs bolt.
It also uses the m/96 front bolt lugs and breeching system.
Then, unlike the two Mauser designs, it has a non splitted left side front lug and a modified escaping gas feature of it's own.
It's only forged with modern steel.
Finally, the FN actions used by HVA have the military style bolt shroud while the 1640 uses a more scope friendly strealined bolt with side safety.
The 1640 is a very strong action and was chosen to handle the 358 Norma Magnum.

At the end, the main difference between the FN 98 and the 1640 is that the 1640 is a small ring action while the FN 98 is a large ring action.

One thing of interest is that FN ntroduced their Supreme action only in 1956 and that it's shaped like the 1640 (introduced 1953)

As for comparing a P-H 98 to both rifles, the early P-H use a standard m/98 action with shroud mounted flag safety while the later use a "commercial" action which is a copy the FN Supreme.

For a picture of the above, see in the HVA rifles sticky, post # 9, I posted a picture of the HVA 1640, FN Supreme and HVA 640 bolts to compare.

If I remember correctly, Boyd's make a stock for the HVA FN98 action, it differs slightly from the standard military '98 action and fits the trigger guard forward tang correctly.

You are absolutely correct and I am absolutely an idiot! Did not see that at all, must have been using my "man eyes" as my wife likes taunting me.

I bought a Boyd's walnut for my 640 and was left unimpressed. I suppose I can't fault Boyd's - some clients want their actions to drop right in while others prefer a semi-inlet. Count me a member of the latter group. It was too loose for my liking and I sold it. I don't imagine they have this problem with modern, single factory, made firearms.
