Update

Well I got my rifle back from the gunsmith. As it turns out the only part of it that is original is the action ;). I had the new barrel put on, replaced the extractor, glass bed the stock and he put on a Bold trigger. I ordered the stock from Richards and in hind sight I am wishing that I would have went elsewhere. Not only was it 6 weeks late but it is very dry and the barrel end warped so it had to spend some time in the press. There is an awful lot of extra wood as well, which really isn't a bad thing because of all the sanding that I have to do to get all of the chunks out. I forgot to take pictures before I started sanding so you are seeing it after a day of carving and sanding. I ordered the stock in American Black Walnut with Rose Wood caps, it should look amazing when I am done. I will be reading through the threads to see what the best finish is for my needs. If anyone is looking for a new stock PLEASE PM me and I will give you some info on other places to get a stock.

Due to the exposer that it had to the ocean when it was on a fishing boat :pirate: (I don't get it either) there is very deep pitting on the receiver and floor plate so it is going back to the smith to get armour coated. Just when I thought I was done

I'll keep you all posted,

Cheers!

Marcel

Here is my newly acquired 8x57 I purchased from TradeEX. It came with the complete side mount minus the lock levers.
8x57js.jpg

Anthony had it listed as a Commercial M96
815xx

It started as a M/648, based on the M/38 "commercial" action. It was restoked with an aftermarket stock. Your S/N makes it a 1945 production rifle. You should be able to find some "Ratchet Lever Knobs" to fit your mount by going 9better than calling) to jig and die makers (machine shops).
This should make you a very nice hunting rifle.

Husqvarna information

Gents,
In my thirst for Husky info I ran across this little gem. It allows one to research serial numbers to years of mfr and link to models + calibers.
Enjoy....

Whatever you want,
As a collector's standpoint, a .308 would be better than a 30-06 in a standard model. As a hunter's choice both are good, they will perform about the same 'til you get into heavy bullets, say from over 180 grains, then, the '06 will have the edge.
A 1640 series would be a very good start.

Thank you.

I just got another one! It's an heirloom! I've never had one of those before. I'll tell the story:
When my Dad was 17 his much older brother was killed in a plane crash. He was an outdoorsman who spent a lot of his free time in the Porcupine Hills in Alberta. He bought himself the best rifle he could get his hands on: a Husqvarna in .270win.

When my Dad was grown he asked his brother's widow [who had remarried] if he could buy the rifle, and was met with a bit of a hostile NO.

A couple months ago I looked up the widow's grown son [from the other marriage] and asked if he had the rifle. He said he didn't know where it was, so I thought that was the end of it.

Last night he called me. He said he found it and would be willing to sell it to me so it could get some use.

Here it is:

It's not fancy, just the plain-jane 1600 std. There is no checkering, not even on the pistol grip. Serial number indicates it was made in 1952.

Baribal, please comment.

I can't make it from your pics, but is there checkering on the fore end? Also, the barrel seems to be 600mm, wich would make it a 1640, not a 1600.
Also, the 1640 series was introduced in 1953. What's the first four digits of your S/N?

The first 4 digits are 1433XX. I got the year from this site: http://www.skydevaaben.com/hvasno/info.xml

I don't know if it's right.

Yes, it has a 600mm barrel, so I guess it's a 1640.

There's no checkering on the fore end, or at all.

Here's some closer pics

Quick question:
What bases should I get for mounting a scope on this? It is factory drilled and tapped, but it's never had a scope. I'm planning to get weaver bases, but do I get ones that say Mauser 98? I wouldn't think they'd fit because this is a small ring and not a large ring. Do I look for ones that say mauser small ring or something?

Thanks.

Weaver #55 and #46 are the correct bases.

Also, your rifle has the correct sights. many times the rear sight has been removed to facilitate mounting a scope, and often the front sight has the hood missing.

Very nice rifle in a great caliber. :)

Well, there are odds in the HVA thing and Skydevaaben is just a translation of the HVA Museum "Jaktvapen" book with all (and a couple more) the imprecisions an errors of the book. The model of your rifle is 1640 Std...
Are you sure this is the one rifle your Uncle have bought in Canada? I'm asking because it's not one of the HVA export models, this is more of a domestic Swedish model.
Still a good rifle and the wood is quite nice for this type of HVA 1640.
