Hello

Was wondering if anyone uses hypervelocity ammo in their 10/22 ?
Stingers,Velocitors,Yellowjackets Etc

Am considering setting one up with some heavier springs to try it out
Just thought there may be some experience out there

My 10/22 is a late 70s/ early 80s vintage, 100% factory, and I've shot thousands of Stingers through it without issue. Mine never fed the truncated cone bullets like Yellowjackets very well, so when I shot gophers more often, I usually used Stingers. I also shot quite a few of the old Winchester Xpediter ammo, which was similar to CCI Stingers, but with a 29 gr bullet if I recall correctly. They didn't shoot very well for me though.

No issues with Stingers through our 10/22's.

Never found it to be the most accurate round, but the result on small game is impressive. IE more "bang flop"...

I assume you’ve tried hyper velocity ammo and your gun shoots it well?

I’ve occasionally run CCI Velocitor’s and Mini-mags in my target 10/22 for beavers. They cycle well with no mods needed to the gun. My understanding is that Stingers are not recommended for a target or tactical 10/22 chamber…more because of their extra brass length, than extra speed. Apparently Stingers are fine in a regular chamber 10/22 but you should confirm that with your Ruger manual. My manual clearly states “Do not shoot Stingers”.

Hyper velocity .22LR ammo will apparently cause more wear to the bolt and action so maybe your spring modification to a higher spring weight is advisable. However it may preclude shooting SV ammo.

My issue is that my gun doesn’t shoot high or hyper velocity ammo particularly well. It does shoot standard velocity ammo the most accurately…something in the 1000-1150 ft/sec range. CCI SV is my “go to” for plinking and high volume shooting. My gun really likes SK-LR for target shooting. So that’s what I use most of the time.

Dont recall ever using hyper V in 10/22

Good to know its no real issue aside from the accuracy

Seems reasonable that standard Velocity would perform the best out of a standard 10/22
Different barrel length or rate of twist may help with Sub/Hyper Velocity

I’ve shot yellow jackets for many years. Mostly through bolt guns. Find the gore score on gophers high. Shoot just ok but not a problem to about 75 yds. Have shot only a few boxes of stingers so no real review. The old Winchester hyper were fun but not accurate at all. I have good luck with CCI mini mags though not hyper.

I have never seen a YJ round do more than 1350fps from any firearm regardless of barrel length. Velocitors same deal, best I could ever do was only as fast as other 40grn HV. Stingers keep up over 1500+fps from most guns. I have never had an average over 1600. 10/22 eats them all just fine though. Aside from accuracy and feeding issues for some.
