Let's say the US drop 5.56 as it's main rifle calibre and adpots something like 6.8 or 6.5 or whatever the hell is out there now.

Would we see surplus 556 for sale in Canada or would they let it out of the country? Seems to me they generally don't allow export permits for weapons so would I'm doubting they'd let ammo out of the country.

Please folks, educate me. :p

UN as strong anti surplus policies but the US never gona mouve to a non nato caliber anyway. surpuls is a thing of the past

Also it should be noted that if they were to move to a new caliber, there would not be any surplus to go around because its probably being used up in Iraq as we speak.

The bill Clinton signed would not allow the ammo to be sld for Civilian end-use. Even US civies can't buy it. It would be used up by the US anyway.

Can they still de-mil (pull it apart) it, and sell the components to remanufacturers?

I have never seen any reman, although there is lots of pull down components, well was. Talon has gone under and there is a new venture which may be a go. But the rumour is that it is doomed from the start due to management problems. They bought Talons equipment. I just had a long conversation with a machinery dealer on this subject last week. Only time will tell if there is cheap demil/reman available again in the US. Not long ago you could buy Talon 50 BMG for $1.50 a round.

Wasn't 5.56 still classified as a NATO round at the time though?

Not as far as I know, when I was in (the Cdn Army). No other country in NATO was using it at the time. The US had been using the 5.56 since the late 60s, and the 7.62 had only been adopted by Nato in the late 50's I think. Canada switched to the 5.56 when I was in Germany, around 1987, but we digress from the question. IMHO if the Yanks were to switch to the 6.8mm I would think at best, we may get a good amount of 5.56 reloading componets on the market, such as the bullets and casing. This seems to what's happend to alot of the old M2 Ball and such, in the near past.
