I dont own a 50bmg but would there be a way on a bolt action 50 to turn down and rethread and rechamber it short enough to reduce the case enough create a wildcat that would be under 10000j?
Keep the rifle booming by shortening the case to fit a new short chamber. Be a heavy gun with a massively wide short case but anything is better then handing it in.
Im genuinely curious as i dont know. I do know those barrels are thick

From a gunsmithing aspect that would be possible. Wouldn't want to speculate on the legal aspect.

Well, seeing as almost every .50 BMG in Non-Restricted... what do you have to turn in? Remember the old saying; "what they don't know can't hurt them".

If you still wanted to use it publically its easy to prove the 50bmg is over the 10000j

I dont have the software to illustrate what case demensions would bring a 50 cal with that case head under but say you could shorten the case so a max charge would send a 671gr bullet at only 2200fps it should fall under the 10000j. Turn down the barrel. New reamer new dies you can keep your 50 shooting. Neutered but still non restricted

face the barrel back one turn. It will now not chamber a 50 bmg. You have a wildcat and can name it whatever you want and set your ballistic parameters for it so it is under the maximum. It is your wildcat, sammi or cip have no specs for it.

Have to admit, i don't see why that wouldn't work. I'd go the extra step of etching the new cartridge name on the barrel. I have etching equipment if anyone in central Alberta goes this route.

Just curious how you're getting your prohibited rifle to the gunsmith now that transportation of your prohibited rifle is prohibited....

Unless you have the equipment and the ability to do it yourself. Which most people don't.

It was a good idea though.

This whole thing makes me want to :puke:

Barrels are not prohibited. Nor are receivers (except ar15).

Spin the barrel off, take the barrel to a smith, have it turned down, reverse process to put together.

It would require a vise and action wrench - while most people might not have this, they’re easy enough to order and use. Or a helpful other gunner may lend a tool and a hand.

Expensive fix to a retarded problem caused by the government... but a fix nonetheless

I suspect that barrel vises and receiver wrenches large enough for .50 rifles aren't common.
But in theory:
Set barrel back one thread.
Trim cases the same amount.
Shorten sizing die.
Don't think anything else would be needed.
Call it the .50 OIC?
Make sure loads produce less than 10K joules of energy.
Project would last until the next round of prohibitions.

I suspect that we will always find a loophole even though they think they cover every angle.
We love firearms and know way more than the people making these stupid laws and always consider the challenge of sticking it right back at them.
It will be interesting to see all the loopholes we can find and possibly negate a bunch of these stupid laws

You gotta admit that shooting/owning a prohibited firearm, that could result in hefty fines and/or jail time, takes some of the fun out of it.

.50 Suckthis

.50 ####youandyourliberalban

Are you guys suggesting only a half suck? It needs to be a full on suck or $uck... ;) .50 FYSWPC or .50 SYSWBH (f yourself with pine cone or s yourself with braided hose) even in fractional quantities, those statements would be painful.

A few days ago I thought of swaging (or turning a .50cal bullet) for making a new round called the .49NCMG with the same contempt in my mind. I'm naturally predisposed toward new fads, but idiot fads provoke invention of faux necessity in response... at one point in history foolish legislation provoked the good guys to bring us the 230 Ackley. There are some odd European handgun rounds that were made because of prohibition of military chamberings.
