Hypothetically speaking how would a firearms owner go about registering a .22 rifle that was given to him by a friend of the family, but the rifle had never been registered by the original owner.

Hypothetically speaking the firearm owner has not seen or taken possesion of the rifle yet, but the original owner wants to get rid of it and was thinking of turning it over to an amnesty program, but the firearm owner would prefer to give it a good home instead. Hypothetically speaking:p

Thanks for the response Slash5, but how do I get it verified and what forms do I need. Can I take possession of it once I have sent the forms in?

Clairification would be greatly appreciated.

I think you can also phone the CFC to get the name of a verifier in your area. I had a gun verified not too long ago and it was quick and easy and FREE OF CHARGE. Buddy lives about 2 minutes down the road. Once you get the paperwork done, just fax it in and then... wait.
Just so you know - if you have your PAL you can purchase the rifle and use it while you wait for the CFC to sort out the paperwork. ;)
Meanwhile, if they scrap the registry - even better!!!

Hey Monty does that mean I could take possesion of the rifle right away or do I have to wait for the paperwork to go through. The original owner does not want it anymore and just wants to get rid of it.

Just went throught the same thing just last week. Went to sell a shotgun that I inherited, some years ago. Called the CFO the buyer sitting beside me and they told me that it was'nt registered. Had a hard time beleiving that I had't thinking OK now the cops are on the way big hassel time. But no just told me to GIVE it to the buyer (he paid me) and have him have it verified and registered? All at no cost.
Almost makes me wonder what the point was to go through the hassel with the orthers.
Makes me ponder another couple of things. Has anyone ever heard of a person charged for possessing a non registered gun. Or has a crime ever been solved from the records that stores have to keep of what ammo and quantity you buy ?????????

You could also wait until Feb 6th and see what the new incoming minister of public safety is going to say...Apparently the registry is on the chopping block. :D

Yes, you can take possession right away. I'm not the CFC or the RCMP so I can't promise to be 100% correct (but, nor can they), but if you have a POL or PAL you are allowed to have a gun in your possession without actually owning it - a lender from a friend, perhaps. Or, in this case, a sale waiting to be verified.
I currently have two guns in my lockers not registered to me, yet. However, I have begun the process and all my ducks are in order. That's the main thing.
As soon as you get the rifle, contact the CFC and let them know you are in possession of a previously unregistered firearm and would like to get it verified and registered.
But, by all means, get that gun away from the chop saw! ;)
