I agree with the CZ 452 as your first rifle.
I picked up a LH 452 American and put a Burris 3-9x40mm Ballistic-Plex on it.
That will be my low cost target rifle to 100 yards.
Fort my second .22LR I bought a blued, synthetic Ruger 10/22.
That will be my plinking/grouse hunting gun out to about 50 yards.

I have a CIL/Anschutz takedown semi that is really nice to shoot. Since it is a takedown it has a two piece stock and is a bit larger making it look like a centrefire.
I've been looking at lever actions and the Browning BL22 has caught my eye. You may like it too. In any case I'm trying to follow the one in one out rule for my guns so I've been considering selling the Anschutz to buy a Browning.

well Andrewe, feel free to PM me with information. I've got a hiccup with my firearm application, so I'm not going to be able to send it in for a couple more weeks. that and I have $700 in computer gear I've got to sell before I'll have the money for my rifle!

from everything I've read on these forums so far Barkly, both the 597 and the 10/22 have QC issues because some work well out of box and others don't, but both have their rabid supporters and sides. the salesman who showed me that Marlin (wish I had gotten the model # off him) likes the Remington 597 and not the Ruger 10/22. it's kinda humorous to see just how wild the views and stances are of gun nutz with their favored makes/models when I compare them against amateur astronomers and their vehement stands on their favored makes/models of optics!

i would buy a 10/22 you can really build these guns , lots of accessories i purchased a savage model 93 fv 22 cal. synthetic stock , bolt action 5 shot mag , accutrigger .blue barrel . shoots cheap ammo and or expensive stuff very acurate . malcolm :
