I am confused... Is pistol grip + stock good or bad for shotgun recoil?

I keep hearing people saying pistol grip is wrong with shotgun but then when I see other people review it they said pistol grip + AR stock help reduce recoil? Is it referring to just pistol grip with no stock one that is bad or generally any pistol grip + stock is still bad for recoil? I do wanna change my traditional stock to a pistol grip + AR stock. That is more before I can adjust the stock length and I do get used to AR type of grip + stock. What else can I make the shotgun more stable? I see there are these grip + stock with springs inside claims to help reduce recoil... honestly I kinda doubt that because the force has to go somewhere. If it doesn't go to your shoulder it has to go somewhere else. I am kinda hoping there is something to help spread distribute the force in multiple places evenly.

Pistol grip stocks are better as long as you pull on the pistol grip rearwards from the front, instead of trying to apply pressure forward away from you like most people do, which only serves to give them a bit of a running start under recoil into both your hand and shoulder.

your best bet is to find out by trying both. In my experience, pistol gripped stocks are GREAT for carrying for extended periods and suck for shooting. I also found that the fixed stock pistol grip styles (speedfeed vs Mesa Tactical LEO stock not the urbino) actually accentuate the recoil especially in the prone position with heavy loads.

YMMV

had a choat PGS on a 870 forever. my go to dog gun forever to don't see how it makes it recoil any more or less than any other stock.

It doesn't recoil any more or less than a regular stock.... it impacts your hand differently.

IMO pistol grips won't actually let you take the recoil any better than if your shooting form is ideal with a conventional stock, but are more forgiving than if it isn't, as often happens if you've got to mount the gun at speed, shoot from odd positions or when moving.

It's just plain easier to find the "shoulder pocket" and brace the gun when you've got a big vertical lever on the back of the gun to work with.

When it comes to dynamically shooting buck and slugs at ground level targets, I'll take the pistol grip.

As far as recoil management goes, outside of being conscious of your shooting form, the most important factor is a good recoil pad, they make a world of difference with heavy loads.

My Knoxx does
I'll bet she does! Say no more! My ATI 870 has a rubberry padded pistol grip which doesn't hurt my hand at all. It does make the gun easier to control for me, but I'm used to pistol grips.
A good recoil pad and Reducing Shotgun Recoil Through Technique is probably the main thing, pistol grip more of an individual preference.

Technique is a major factor when shooting a pistol gripped shotgun as well as ammunition choice, especially if you like to shoot shotguns like I do. :)

My preferred ammunition for shotgun handgunning is Seller & Bellot 12 Gauge 2-3/4" 1oz Special Sport Slugs (1345 FPS)

I don't shoot the big 3" shells like that tho and full power 2-3/4" shells need a little rest for my hands in between shots as the CAA M4 Stock and Pistol Grip does not have comfort in mind but shouldered is no problem at all, a slip on recoil pad sure goes a LONG WAYS and I'll never talk down on them unless it's the really crappy one from Canadian Tire.

Limbsaver is #1 in recoil pads as far as I am concerned.

I am totally new to shotgun. Guess anything new is always a learning curve to overcome and lots of trial and errors. It's not like I never shoot a shotgun before but more like.. < 10 per year using my friends' stuff. Now it comes down to having my own and probably doing a box of 25 shots per weekend. May be a year later when I look back at this I will be laughing at myself for all the silly questions ;)

Well you have to start somewhere, and the more you learn from other's experiences, the less you have to learn from your own mistakes.

I'm in the same boat, Lavino, except, I've never used a shotgun at all! :) So the "silly questions" are helping me too!
I just keep reading the posts to get an idea what others are using.

I have a pistol grip and ar stock on an 870 using the mesa tactical leo adapter + the enidine recoil tube.

Yes the tube works like a charm. I can shoot slugs ALL DAY LONG because of the setup. It is like night and day.

There is no bs or violation of physics. The enidine recoil tube simply stretches the recoil energy over a longer time reducing the peak, thus felt recoil.

I love my setup. So worth it.
